Rihanna has been made ambassador for Barbados. There's absolutely nothing funny about it at all. Barbados is having a tough time in the current economic climate and a deal like this could really help raise their profile on the global stage. Tourism is a vital part of the country's economy and hopefully, with Rihanna's help, they can really boost their profits, possibly to the moon, maybe even to the stars.
We're not sure whether you've ever been to Barbados, but it is a magical place. They've got a beach, and roads and hospitals, and even fully working light fittings. Rihanna certainly thinks it's great anyway, and she's been everywhere and done everything to everyone, so she probably knows what she's talking about, wouldn't you say?:
“Barbados is a place like no other and one of the reasons for this is the spirit and national pride of our people,”
“I want each and every visitor to this beautiful island to experience what makes this destination different from all others and that is the spirit and warmth of my fellow Barbadians.”
However, just because she left the country when she was 16 that doesn't mean she's not a true Bajan, and the Barbadian Ministry of Tourism and Truth recognises this:
“In the hearts of every Barbadian, Rihanna is known as the girl down the road, but to the world she has become a musical sensation and social phenomenon,”
“She is a great source of national pride to Barbados and we are thrilled to enter into this formal partnership to promote Barbados as a leading tourist destination.”
Did you know Rihanna even has her own holiday in Barbados? It's called Rihanna Day. People carry yellow umbrellas around because of her song, Umbrella. Maybe one day the whole world will celebrate Rihanna Day.
