As a troubled youth she used to slit her wrists to deal with depression and her raging emotions.

And Demi Lovato has revealed she is proud of the tattoos that cover her scars, as it proves she has overcame her problems.

The controversial singer and actress, who last year again turned to self harming, makes the revelations in this months edition of Glamour magazine, where she shows off her curves in a revealing photoshoot.

Demi, 19, who self-mutilated from the age of 11, said: 'I think scars are like battle wounds - beautiful, in a way.

'They show what you’ve been through and how strong you are for coming out of it.

'My tattoos say "Stay strong," "Stay" on one [wrist] and "strong" on the other.

'Now I’m able to look at them and be thankful for being alive.'

The stars erratic behaviour in 2010 , which included punching a backing dancer for her ex-boyfriend Joe's band the Jonas Brothers, led to her staying in rehab earlier this year.

And she said her rehabilitation has made her a better person.

She said: 'I think that I’ve been blessed over the past year to be able to start over.'

Demi had previously revealed she had been treated for bulimia and self injury following an intervention involving her family and management.

But now she is recovering from her woes she also revealed she is looking for a lover who can help her with her issues.

She said: 'Someone who’s not only supportive in my career but also in my [emotional] recovery.

'It’s a big responsibility dating me. Because I come with a little bit of baggage, you know?

'I’m completely open. I’m honest about the journey I’ve been on, so I definitely don’t take dating lightly anymore. And they have to make me laugh!”

The sexy singer also revealed her top ten single Skyscraper was her way of sticking it to people who had been cruel to her.

She said: 'It’s to every person who tried to bring me down.

'Everyone has the bully or the mean girl or the ex-boyfriend who tried to bring them down.

'For me, I think of the people who really weren’t there for me when I went into treatment.

'It was a really dark time for me because I had only a few people—I had surrounded myself with so many artificial friendships. It’s about those people too.'
