'I've never, never been naked in a film before': Carey Mulligan sheds her good-girl image as well as her clothes as she opens up about her new role in W Magazine

We're used to seeing her playing sweet and innocent types, but good-girl actress Carey Mulligan has finally given us a glimpse of her provocative side.

The coy An Education star has disrobed for the cover of January's W magazine, wearing just a white bra with a top dropping down by her sides.

And inside the publication, Carey is happy to open up even more as she poses for photographer Michael Thompson in a series of stunning portrait shots.

Seductive: Carey reveals she appears in her first fully nude scene in the movie and had to sing for the role

The striking image of the 26-year-old on the front cover appears alongside the tag line: 'Carey Mulligan: Naughty But Nice - The star of Shame sheds her good-girl image.'

And that she does in the eye-opening photos and candid interview.

Carey is currently promoting Steve McQueen's Shame, in which she plays Michael Fassbender's wayward sister Sissy.

The role is a departure for Carey, as she is seen appearing in her first fully nude scene, as well as a challenging suicide attempt storyline.

Speaking of her nude scene, Carey justifies it to the magazine, saying: 'I’ve never, never been naked in a film before; I’ve been topless once or twice, but always in sort of very innocent ways.

'And I’ve always been sort of staunchly feminist about it, I’ve never relished the idea of doing it, and never if it was inappropriate or gratuitous in any way.

'But I just felt it was absolutely right; that’s exactly who she was. She wanted to be seen, she’s an exhibitionist and she’s provocative.'

And the actress admits she was desperate to land the role, begging co-director Steve McQueen to hand her the part.

'I just talked for an hour. Steve was trying to leave, but I kept on: “No, don’t go - I don’t have the job yet!”...He kept trying to pay the bill, and I said, “No, no, no. Sit down," Carey revealed.

'He got in a cab, but I wouldn’t leave him - I got in, too. Finally he said, “I’m going to my appointment now.” And I said okay. That afternoon, I got a call saying I had the role.'

It appears the actress is going to some lengths to show another side to her normally straight-laced roles.

In the photoshoot for W, she is seen in a series of provocative and dramatic shots.

In one black and white image she has a bed sheet wrapped around her as she stands on a roof, while her cropped hair is backcombed to give it height.

She also poses for a dramatic shot which sees her running down a hallway carrying her shoes.

Carey also adopts a Sixties-inspired look for another photo by Michael Thompson, as her haired is gelled down and her make-up gives off the Twiggy effect.

Throughout the interview, Carey reveals all about the role in the erotic drama, opening up about the various challenges she had to face.

Not only did she have to drop her clothes for the part, but Carey also showed off her singing skills.

But she's adamant she didn't have to perfect her voice for the role.

She says: 'I’ve never sung in a movie before. The point wasn’t really that Sissy was a great singer—it was more that she attracted people.

'I sing “New York, New York” in the film, and Steve wanted it live. We did 15 takes—because every time I made a mistake or my voice fell out of tune or I lost my breath, we’d have to cut, and Steve wanted to do the whole thing in one go.'

And Carey even had to make up her own lyrics for one special scene: 'At one point he wanted Sissy to sing something else and asked me to make up a song. He said, “You’re an artist, aren’t you? We can’t afford the rights to a famous song, so make one up.”

'I was walking around the room thinking, How do you write a song?! Eventually I made up this really bluesy song and sang two lines.'

The shots are a welcome change for the star, who recently appeared posing in the same photo on the covers of Glamour, Elle and Vogue in the space of just 14 months.

It was first seen gracing the cover of U.S. Vogue in October 2010, then was used by German Glamour in December 2010, and then, mysteriously resurfaced on Elle France for their November 2011 issue.

Lucky actress Carey Mulligan has revealed a kissing scene with Johnny Depp in their movie had to be axed because she looked too 'uncomfortable'.

The Oscar-nominated British star appeared alongside the Hollywood heartthrob in the 2009 film Public Enemies.

'I had to kiss him several times,' she told the Graham Norton Show.

'It was 16 times, but it was cut out of the film because I looked so uncomfortable.

'I was kissing Johnny Depp and I got really nervous.'

Carey, 26, whose appearance on the show alongside Johnny Depp, said she still finds it difficult to accept she is appearing opposite huge names, including her latest role in The Great Gatsby with Leonardo DiCaprio.

'I grew up watching everything he's ever done and it's difficult as I have to hide my inner fan when I am around him - it's terrible.

'He claims not to be able to dance when we do a dancing scene and I have to hide the fact that I know he can because I saw him dance in Titanic.'

And she admitted she was a little embarrassed about her parents seeing some of her movies.

In another new film, Shame, she plays a character with sex addiction, which she described as 'a little bit racy'.

Johnny gets his own back though, appearing in a sketch for Ricky's new show, Life's Too Short.

'He is alright, he’s in the new show,' Ricky said.

'People said "You’ve insulted everyone, Johnny Depp is furious". So I sent him an email and said "Sorry about the Globes" and he said "I loved it, of course I wasn’t annoyed”.'

Asked if Angelina Jolie is in his new show too, he said: 'I didn’t ask her, she didn’t look so happy.'

Asked why he had said yes to appearing in Ricky’s series, Johnny said: 'There was no way to reject it, it was just so perfect.'

Ricky also revealed: 'Robert De Niro called me up after the Globes and said "Good job, you were great, would you like me to talk to anyone?" I thought he was going to have someone whacked.'

Ricky then asked: 'I didn’t buy the controversy about the Globes, who did I really offend?'

And Carey proclaims: 'I was there and I think you offended quite a few people.'

Joining the show hotfoot from the London premier of his latest film, The Rum Diary, Johnny talked about his friendship with Hunter S Thompson on whose diary the film is based.

Graham described Johnny as ‘the best character actor in the world’.

He modestly responded: 'Good lord. I think it’s just some form of schizophrenia that has worked for me. My characters are born out of strange things like the extreme heat of a sauna and other things and then I bring them to set.

'The conversation [with film executives] normally starts with "What is wrong with you?"'

  • The Graham Norton Show screen on BBC One tonight at 10.35pm

Engaged already? Carey Mulligan and Marcus Mumford set to wed after just five months

By Daily Mail Reporter

Some might say they're moving too fast, but sometimes you have to go with your heart.

That's likely to be the reason behind Carey Mulligan and Marcus Mumford reportedly getting engaged to one another after just five months together.

The couple have been dating since February this year and have been embroiled in a whirlwind romance ever since.

Now, according to The Sun, the twosome have taken things a step further and got engaged to one another.

The report claims that Mumford & Sons singer Marcus, 24, popped the question at the weekend during the couple's stay at Babington House in Somerset.

According to the article Carey, 26, spent her time at the £250-a-night hotel showing guests a new diamond ring.

An onlooker apparently told the newspaper: 'Carey looked like the cat who had got the cream. She was wearing a beautiful ring and didn't seem to mind who saw it.

'They were stuck to each other like glue. She was doing most of the talking and he was hanging on her every word.'

The pair first met when Marcus performed in Nashville, Tennessee - Carey had only split with her ex-boyfriend Shia LaBeouf a few months earlier.

A spy told the Daily Mail in March: ‘Marcus invited Carey to watch him play a secret show in the basement of his friend Mike Harris’s home in Nashville. She sat in the front row and while he was singing Marcus looked down at Carey and she blushed. It was clear they had chemistry.

‘Afterwards they went to the City House restaurant and dined with friends but they sat together and acted like a couple.

‘Carey’s hoping they can spend more time together when Marcus flies back to America next month for a major tour with his band. He’s hired a vintage train instead of a tour bus and has asked Carey to join him for the trip. It’s early days but they seem to enjoy each other’s company.’

Carey joined Marcus for a brief period when he and his group toured the U.S. aboard a vintage train on their Railroad Revival Tour.

In a video shot by a fan in Arizona earlier this year the couple are seen playfully dancing with one another and sharing a kiss behind the scenes of one of the group's concerts, unaware they are being filmed.

In the months since they got together Carey has made trips from New York to the UK to see her beau spending time at his London home.

The Oscar-nominated actress went on something of a dating spree after splitting from her long-term boyfriend Shia LaBeouf, 24, last October.

She enjoyed a fling with Sienna Miller’s new man, actor Tom Sturridge, 25, at the end of last year, and a whirlwind affair with Olivier award-winner Eddie Redmayne, 29, earlier this year.

Marcus split from long-time love, singer Laura Marling, last year.
