Brucie McFlies into a panic: Stage invasion by winner's band stuns veteran host

By Ben Todd and Louise Eccles

It was one part of Strictly which had definitely not been choreographed – to the consternation of veteran host Sir Bruce Forsyth.

As boy-band drummer Harry Judd was crowned King of the Ballroom, his three bandmates from McFly invaded the stage to share his celebrations.

They leapt on top of him, leaving his dance partner Aliona Vilani standing alone and Sir Bruce in a panic.

Not realising they were friends of Judd, the 83-year-old host mistook them for troublemakers and shouted: ‘Get off the stage! Get off the stage! Get off! Get off!’ before trying to shoo them back to their seats.

To make matters worse, Judd’s father Christopher then appeared on stage at the Tower Ballroom in Blackpool.

A clearly irritated Sir Bruce said to Judd: ‘Is that your father? Is that your dad?,’ before also telling him to: ‘Get off! Get off!’ and waving him back to his seat.

Judd’s bandmates were unrepentant about their behaviour.

Tom Fletcher said: ‘I think Brucie thought we were streakers. We wanted to streak but I don’t think the BBC would be too happy about that.’

And Dougie Poynter – who this month triumphed in ITV’s I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! – tweeted: ‘Ha ha! Baited Bruce!’ Some fans of the show also took to Twitter and claimed Sir Bruce’s attempt to remove McFly from the stage was ‘the best television moment of 2011’ and ‘TV gold’.

Judd, who turns 26 on Friday, had been the odds-on favourite to win the show. He said afterwards: ‘First the boys came on and then my dad glided on to the stage too. I was like, “Dad, what are you doing?” ’

While some critical viewers questioned how much longer Sir Bruce could continue with his arduous Strictly schedule, BBC sources said he would ‘carry on for as long as he could’ and ‘would not even contemplate retiring’ while he was in good health. A source close to Sir Bruce said he was more than likely to return for the next series of the show.

Another added: ‘Sir Bruce is Strictly.’

Judd also had kind words for the perennial presenter, who had said the drummer was so good he could be a professional dancer. ‘I’m not sure if that is entirely true but it is kind of Bruce to say,’ he said. ‘It has been an absolute honour to be on the same show as Bruce and, thankfully, I got to say that to him.’

Backstage whispers

  • Jason Donovan shunned the after-show party and went straight home. He was believed to be devastated at not winning and was seen picking up his bags from his hotel shortly after the show finished. Sir Bruce Forsyth also failed to turn up.
  • Judge Alesha Dixon was unimpressed by the event at a bar in Blackpool’s Pleasure Beach theme park. Wearing a thigh-skimming green dress and towering nude heels, she left at 1.30am. She said: ‘I will be honest with you. It’s all right in there, but it’s not the best.’
  • An exhausted dancer complained that organisers wanted to double the number of shows in the Strictly live tour. ‘But we said no,’ she told a friend.
  • Judge Bruno Tonioli is dreaming of an exotic holiday. He was overheard telling friends: ‘All I want to do is read books and swim naked.’

Judd, 25, beat Waterloo Road star Chelsee Healey – partnered by Pasha Kovalev – and Jason Donovan with professional dancer Kristina Rihanoff in the showcase final, which drew a peak audience of more than 13million.
Afterwards, Judd said he almost did not do the show and had to be persuaded to take part by his girlfriend, violinist Izzy Johnston.

‘Originally, as soon as my manager said you’ve been asked to do Strictly Come Dancing I was like, “No-no-no”,’ he said.

‘But my girlfriend and family said, “What a great opportunity. You’ll be taught to dance”.’

Despite producing four faultless routines when it mattered, Judd admitted that the dress rehearsal for the final was ‘disastrous’. He said: ‘In the dress run of the American smooth, the lift at the end went wrong and I almost dropped [Aliona].

‘Then, in the Argentine tango, I tripped her up and we had to miss a whole section. Everyone was reassuring us, “Don’t worry – bad dress run, good show”.’

The drummer – a former pupil of Uppingham public school in Rutland – won a loyal legion of fans during the series with his topless performances. However, he admitted he found some of the revealing outfits he was made to wear each week embarrassing.

He said: ‘If I was watching myself, I would be like, “Mate, put it away”. I said I wasn’t going to do any more topless dancing after Wembley. I just thought it was so embarrassing when James and Brendan ripped my top off. Enough is enough.’

At the after-show party in a Blackpool bar, Judd stuck to bottled water. He said: ‘I don’t really drink. I stopped drinking last year and that has been a good thing for me. On Strictly I’ve had no hangovers and I’ve been able to focus.’

At Christmas, he said, he would ‘hide and chill for a bit’ and spend time with ‘my mum, dad and granny’.

Harry did it to help the band

By Dan Wootton

Anyone predicting that he will use his Strictly success to seek stardom in his own right just doesn’t know my old friend Harry Judd.

A few days before Saturday’s glittering final, in his typically modest manner, he told me: ‘I honestly can’t wait to get back behind my drums and let my bandmates take the lead for a while.’

In fact, the reason Harry originally decided to compete in Strictly was to bring fresh attention to McFly, who are attempting to make the difficult transition into an adult act as their fans grow up with them.

Just the start: Harry Judd, pictured with dance partner Aliona Vilani, will be hoping his triumph can help his band McFly secure more success
Just the start: Harry Judd, pictured with dance partner Aliona Vilani, will be hoping his triumph can help his band McFly secure more success

After Harry’s triumph and bandmate Dougie Poynter’s surprise win on ITV1’s I’m A Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here! earlier in the month, McFly’s management are urging the talented quartet to release new material in a quest for their first No 1 song in five years.

Harry, who now shuns boozy nights out on the town in preference for nights on the sofa in his pyjamas at home with 27-year-old girlfriend Izzy Johnston, has made it clear to me that he now intends to make a life-long commitment to the woman he describes as his ‘soulmate’.

She will have to put up with seeing her man in the arms of another woman for just a little bit longer, however, because the winning dance partners are the star attraction on the upcoming Strictly tour.

Banner year for McFly! Harry Judd mobbed by ecstatic bandmates as he is crowned winner of Strictly Come Dancing

Just weeks after his bandmate Dougie Poynter was crowned King of the Jungle on I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here, Harry Judd has won Strictly Come Dancing 2011.

His ecstatic McFly bandmates stormed the dancefloor moments after hosts Bruce Forsyth and Tess Daly announced their names.

Sir Bruce was left chasing the boy band off the floor as they interrupted the Glitterball ceremony in their rush to congratulate the 25-year-old drummer.

The ecstatic boys jumped on Judd, leaving his partner Aliona to cheer by herself before they enveloped her in their group celebration.

'All I can say is, from the bottom of heart thank you to everyone for voting for Aliona and me,' the thrilled 25-year-old said. 'I've been on the best show on TV and I'm just honoured.'

The musician had earlier admitted that he wasn't convinced that joining the show was the best decision early on in the competition. 'I was dreading it to be honest. I thought, what am I doing?'

'I was so nervous when I first started and I didn't think I'd be able to do it. But Aliona has gotten me through it.'

Shortly after Harry was crowned as the winner, 'King of the jungle' Dougie joked on Twitter: 'I have a queen!!!!!! Thanks so much guys! This is ace!!!'

The McFly boys had previously promised to strip and post a nude picture to Twitter should Harry win, and Dougie promised fans tonight: 'Naked picture as promised coming later, need to find a yard glass first.'

A few weeks ago, Danny Jones fulfilled his promise to pose naked if Dougie won I'm A Celebrity, and the whole band will apparently be joining him tonight for the new tradition.

Going into the final results Harry and Aliona were leading by three points, with a combined score of 156.

Runner-up Chelsee Healey said: 'I'm really proud of meself.' In a Sally Field moment, the Waterloo Road actress said: 'To know people actually like me is really nice.'

Harry and Aliona had heated things up during the second half of the live final with a romantic American Smooth and a sexy Argentine tango, for which they received their second perfect score of the evening.

'Like the nation, I've fallen in love with you too darling,' said an uncharacteristic Craig, shortly before Harry was announced as the winner.

Both the finalists performed a new dance for their third performance of the evening following Jason Donovan's departure.

Chelsee and Pasha also received a 39 for their equally romantic Rumba to Fools Rush In.

They then performed the quick step from week four that first saw them get noticed as serious contenders by the judges.

Despite Craig telling them it was a 'first class' performance, he stopped short of awarding them a ten, lowering their otherwise perfect score to 39.

An hour earlier, Jason Donovan was the first finalist to be eliminated from the final tonight.

Despite topping the leader board going in the results show, the Australian and his partner Kristina Rihanoff were voted off by the public.

'After my wife and children, this has been the best experience of my life,' the gracious star said after hearing the news.

Donovan became emotional as he thanked partner Kristina, who he called a visionary.

An hour earlier, the actor and singer looked like he could have turned his fortunes around after muscling bookies favourite Harry Judd out of first place in the judges' scores.

But it wasn't to be.

Jason also thanks his wife and children, who he said had been with him through 'all the ups and downs in my life.'

Earlier in the show, Jason said: 'It has been such a ride. My life has had ups and downs and that's what has happened to me in Strictly. Because of the downs, you appreciate the highs so much more. I've thrown myself into it.'

After receiving the lowest judges' score - 37 - of the evening for his first performance, a tango to I Will Survive, he upped his game to get a perfect score for the show dance.

The judges heaped praise on Jason and Kristina after their second performance, with Bruno telling them: 'It was more than a show dance it was showbusiness extravaganza! You could open on Broadway tomorrow and break box office records!'

'Ferocious and full-on darling,' said Craig. 'I would get that woman a restraining order, amazing!'

Jason's departure leaves Harry and Chelsee in the competition. Harry opened the show with a quickstep.

Before his dance, Harry said: 'I've been smiling all week. My Strictly experience has been one of the most important experiences of my life- I never thought I'd say that.

'Strictly has been refreshing and I've absolutely loved it. I'm very grateful.'

'It's like being a dad and watching your son play football for the first time,' said his bandmate Dougie. 'You think, "Oh, that's my boy!"'

Aliona said: 'I wasn't sure about Harry, he came into the studio pigeon-toed, and I thought "Aw, bless."'

After the energetic quickstep, Len said: 'You've come out all guns blazing. That was brilliant, well done.'

'You came, you danced and you conquered Blackpool,' said Bruno. 'It was delivered with flash and dance. Loved it.'

Craig added: 'I only had one problem last time, that ghastly lazy left foot of yours, but you seemed to have improved that, so I absolutely love it.'

'I will survive? YOU have survived, 14 weeks of blood seat and tears,' said Len afterwards. 'You have 20 years on the other two and you have given everything with so much energy. 10

Bruno enthused: 'You excelled! Talk about a tango with split personalities. At one point you were like Wolverine and then you were like a disco diva from 1978.'

'Your bottom was sticking out a lot, but I have to say it's a fantastic number,' said Craig. 'It's through determination and good old fashioned hard work that you've got there.

The judges awarded 38 to the couple - perfect scores from Alesha and Len and nines each from Craig and Bruno, putting them behind Harry and Aliona after the first dance.

Chelsee and Pasha Kovalev were the last of the three finalist couples to perform their first dance.

'Dancing is me now,' The Waterloo Road star said. 'When I first started people didn't know who I was. Strictly has brought out an elegant side of me. I'll leave the competition a different person, I've grown up a lot. Not in size! I've learned to be more confident. I'll treasure this forever.'

They performed their popular Shrek jive from week ten.

Len told them: 'I've judged in this room many times, and watching you, a girl who came here with no dancing experience, do that jive so well gives me a much pleasure as judging world champions. 10

'For me that was my favourite jive of the whole series,' said Alesha. 10

'That was a premium grade jive of eye-popping vibrancy,' shouted Bruno. 'You were great!'

Craig enthused: 'A complete and absolute bundle of joy to watch. It was about a thousand steps a minute. I loved it.' 9

'It's already the best night of my life,' said Chelsee afterwards.

They received an almost-perfect 39, with just Craig deducting one point from their score, placing Harry in first place after the first dances, followed by Chelsee, and Jason in third place.

For the show dance section, Harry and Aliona performed a sexy, Fifties-inspired jive to Great Balls of Fire.

The boy band member's famous chest was out on full display for the second dance, in an unbuttoned red shirt.

He jumped behind the drum set to show off his day-job skills at the end of the number.

'You have talent written all over you,' said Len. 'You gave it all your all. Everyone was so impressed by that.'

Alesha: I loved the concept, it really suited you. The lifts were almost dangerous but they were fabulous.

'Its great guns harry!' said an over-excited Bruno. 'Rock God!'

They didn't do quite as well as their first dance, receiving 37, with only Alesha awarding a perfect ten.

Chelsee gave Beyoncé a run for her money in a tiny gold number for her show dance, to One Night Only.

Despite winning warm praise, the performance received the lowest score of the evening, just 36.

The Saturdays perform at Chester Rocks alongside McFly and Sugababes

Wayne Bridge played the doting boyfriend to his WAG Frankie Sandford yesterday, as he accompanied his girlfriend to her gig.

The Saturdays were performing at Chester Rocks music festival at Chester Racecourse and Frankie’s number one fan appeared to be the Manchester City footballer.

The 30-year-old left back arrived with Frankie, 22, and the couple wore matching outfits of white tops and jeans.

And the couple were even carrying the same beige jackets and matching cropped haircuts.

Luckily the couple didn't bump into Frankie's ex-boyfriend Dougie Poynter from McFly though, who were also performing at the festival.

After spending some time with her footballer beau, the singer soon changed into a pair of gold denim micro shorts, a midriff leather jacket and matching heels to join her girl band on stage.

Frankie met up with her girls, Vanessa White, Una Healy, Mollie King and Rochelle Wiseman, to pose for photographs before hitting the stage.

And the girls were dressed to kill in their trademark colourful ensembles and heels.

Mollie, 24, wore a bright orange asymmetrical dress alongside black laced ankle boots, while Vanessa, 21, joined in on the orange theme with her top but donned blue shorts.

Rochelle, 22, also threw on a flowing mandarin-coloured skirt with the same boots that Mollie wore but accompanied them with a black top.

And Una, 29, opted for a pink and purple strapless dress that boasted a long train from the back.

The band belted out singles from their third studio album Notorious, as well as some of their hits such as Forever Is Over and Missing You.

Una tweeted after the event: ‘Chester, you certainly did ROCK this evening! Thank you X.’

Also playing at the two day outdoor music festival was the Sugababes, Taio Cruz, The Wanted and Eliza Doolittle.

Danny Jones from McFly was also spotted strolling around the racecourse, but Frankie Sandford’s ex-boyfriend Dougie Poynter from the band wasn’t photographed off the stage - but rocked when on it.

But McFly were performing yesterday, which may have proved awkward for the former couple, who split up last November.

Leggy ladies: The Saturdays set the tone for their tour in skimpy shorts as they perform at Alton Towers concert

After announcing plans for their first arena tour, the pressure is on for The Saturdays to come up with some sexy stage outfits.

And last night the girls set the tone for their shows by donning tiny shorts and bright colourful costumes as they performed at the the Alton Towers Live concert yesterday.

All the girls showed off their toned physiques in the skimpy outfits as they treated fans to a selection of their hits.

While Una Healy went for a tight pink mini-skirt, Rochelle Wiseman also opted for a skirt with an orange floaty number.

Meanwhile, Frankie Sandford, Mollie King and Vanessa White all went for little hotpants to display their enviable figures.

After announcing their first arena tour earlier this month, The Saturdays said they were more than a little excited about performing to such large crowds.

Mollie explained: 'It's our first ever arena tour so it's really exciting for us and its going to be in December which we're especially excited about because everyone going to be in the party mood with Christmas.'

And Una added that fans can expect a lot more of the colour-blocking the girls have been experimenting with on the tour.

She explained to FemaleFirst website: 'We mix it up a lot. Colour has always been a big part of it, bold, block colours. For one video one of us might be wearing red and then green you know, we don't stick to anything or any particular colour, we like to mix it around.

'We work very closely with our stylist and we try on loads of different outfits. He knows what works best for us, but we have a huge say as well, we're always very much a big part of that. Fashion is a huge thing for us.'

The girls were just one of the acts to take to the stage at the Alton Towers concert.

They were joined by stars including JLS, meaning that Rochelle had the opportunity to spend time with her boyband boyfriend Marvin Humes.

Following a brief split last year, Rochelle and Marvin are now stronger than ever and even sparked rumours they were engaged when Rochelle was spotted wearing a jewel on her ring finger.

But Marvin's JLS bandmate Oritse Williams said the pair aren't quite ready for that step yet.
