The X Factor USA finalists were not the only ones in hot competition tonight.

There was also a battle in the style stakes between female judges Nicole Scherzinger, 33, and Paula Abdul, 49.

Nicole just about pipped Paula to the post, pouring her stunning figure into a short, white keyhole dress with a cut out triangular panel around the bust.

She completed her look with platform heels and a retro quiffed hair style.
Paula, meanwhile, went for a long classic black dress with twist, with a cutaway sections on top over sheer material.

She wore her hair long and looked minuscule in the ensemble as she confidently strode out on to the stage with the other judges.

Tonight marked the first night of the two-part season finale.
Finalists Melanie Amaro, Josh Krajcik and Chris Rene all took to the stage to perform two songs each, including a duet with R Kelly, Alanis Morissette and Avril Lavigne respectively.
Tomorrow a winner will be crowned based on a public vote.
And no doubt Nicole and Paula will have another pair of eye-catching outfits to wear to mark the occasion.

It was crunch time on the X Factor tonight, as the final three finalists had their last chances to wow both the judges and the public for their all important vote.

Tomorrow night either Melanie Amaro, Josh Krajcik or Chris Rene will be crowned winner, and will go home $5 million richer.
Tonight all three contestants sang duets with some of the biggest names in the music business.

Crowd pleasers: All three finalists had the judges jumping up and down in their seats

Josh Krajcik performed with Alanis Morissette, Chris Rene did a duet with Avril Lavigne and Melanie Amaro took to the stage with R. Kelly.

Krajcik, 30, opened the show, singing Morisette's hit Uninvited, from the hit soundtrack to the 1998 film City of Angels.

The audience was shocked and surprised when Alanis actually joined the Columbus, Ohio native on stage to power through the harmonies.

'Ladies and gentleman, I cannot believe ‭I am inviting to the stage, the amazing Alanis Morrisette,' Krajcik yelled through the microphone, beaming.

Clearly a little shaky at first, he sang along with the 37-year-old Canadian singer, the two going in and out of the verses together.

Following the performance, the Grammy-Award winning singer praised Krajcik, saying that he was a 'very soulful man'.

'Wow, that was surreal,' judge L.A. Reid exclaimed.' It was such a natural pairing, for you to sing with Alanis Morrisette.'

'I couldn't think of a better way to open this competition tonight,' added Paula Abdul. 'Not only did you hold your own, you but you kept your identity, dignity and integrity.'

But Simon wasn't as impressed, pointing out that he thought Krajcik was intimidated by Alanis.

'Josh I thought you were a little bit intimidated at the beginning... but it was an eight out of 10,' he said in a lukewarm tone.

But Krajcik's mentor Nicole Scherzinger refuted Simon's claims, telling Josh that 'the sign of a true artist is acknowledging the other person you're singing with. It shows how wonderful and generous you are as an artist.'

Next up with was Chris Rene and Avril Lavigne, who performed her hit song Complicated together in matching leather.

'Ladies and Gentleman, the moment you have been waiting for, Avril Lavigne,' Rene said motivating the already roaring audience.

Like a teenage girl Avril was jumping up and down at the sidelines, clearly eager to get on stage with Rene.

The pair were like two peas in a pod with Avril even doing some rapping with Rene.

'That was kick a**. Chris is amazing. I think everyone should vote for him!' Avril said of Rene following the performance.

'It was a little shaky in the take off, but you came out on top... By the end your energy was so flipping infectious. You shined up there!' Nicole praised.

'You just sang with Avril Lavigne... What a wonderful, current, feel-good performance,' Paula gushed.

Simon said he thought that Rene looked comfortable throughout the performance.

'When it kicked in, I felt your total joy and confidence... And that would be a record,' he said.

L.A agreed, saying his protege: 'looked really at home with Avril.'

You guys looked like you were cut from the same cloth,' he said. 'I agree with Simon; that could be a record that we could cut tomorrow, and it would be a big hit.'

Going wild: Fans from his hometown in Wooster, Ohio were going nuts for the 30-year-old

Also cosy with her superstar singer was Simon Cowell's finalist Melanie Amaro.

The 19-year-old from Florida held hands with R. Kelly as they performed his hit power ballad, I Believe I Can Fly, the first time he has ever allowed someone to duet the song with him.

Following the performance, Kelly had nothing but praise for the diva in the making, telling the judges and audience members that 'There's no doubt in my mind this girl is on her way to the moon.'

Considering she was singing with one of R'n'B's legends, L.A still thought that Melanie shouldn't have been outshined as much by Kelly.

'If I am to be honest (and you know that I love you), I felt like you got a little bit overshadowed by R. Kelly. I expect more from you,' he said.

'I think that she did the best that she could. She put a thousand percent into that performance,' argued Nicole.

And Simon had nothing but praise for his protege.

'I wouldn't listen to grumpy and dumpy over there (referring to L.A)... to me that was an incredible duet,' he said.

'You didn't look like someone in a talent competition, you looked like someone that could be a really important and established artist.'

For the second round the contestants went back to solo, singing their signature sounds that they have best become renown for.

Krajcik, Rene, Amaro all sang their songs from their original auditions.

Krajcik used his soulful vocals to do a rendition of Etta James classic, At Last, throwing in some guitar playing for good measure.

On the LED-lit stage, all of the judges thought he looked at home on the stage.

'I am so proud man, you look so at home up there man... You are such a rock star,' L.A said. 'You took your guitar and made it your own.'

'You owned that stage.' praised Paula. 'Great job tonight.'

Nicole said that Krajcik and music were at one.

'From day one, you have delivered every single performance. Music loves you,' she gushed. 'I am so proud of you!'

Rene did an updated version of his rap Young Homie, celebrating eight months of sobriety just yesterday.

Simon was blown away, telling Rene, 'That was your five-million-dollar song!

'We all have a purpose in life, and you are serving your purpose right now with that song,' Nicole gushed. 'That is yours and our belief anthem.'

Paula was even more enthused, jumping up and down screaming 'Vote!' to the audience.

'You make every one fall in love with you!' she screamed.

'Melanie you empowered me and that is what music is all about right there,' Nicole said fighting back tears.

She's got the X, Y and Z Factor! Nicole Scherzinger steals Simon Cowell's attention away from Paula Abdul in a sizzlingly short dress

Last week it was Paula Abdul who stole the spotlight in a daringly minuscule dress.

But Nicole Scherzinger was clearly not planning on getting upstaged again tonight as she slipped into her own eye-catching ensemble for an X Factor USA press conference in Los Angeles.

The 33-year-old talent judge looked stunning in the low-cut, zipped cream outfit - while Paula, 49, covered up in a similar-coloured trouser suit.

A certain Simon Cowell appeared to be quite enamoured by Ms Scherzinger as the pair cosied up for cameras.

In one amusing pose the 52-year-old X Factor boss is seen stood between Nicole and Paula, with his hands raised questioningly.

Cowell recently admitted that he almost bedded Abdul - but tonight he seemingly only had eyes for the stunning former Pussycat Doll.

Along with fourth judge LA Reid, the panel were on hand to chat at a press conference ahead of this week's season finale.

Ballad singer Melanie Amaro, 19, bluesy Josh Krajcik, 30, and rapper Chris Rene, 28, will sing for the X Factor prize on Wednesday.

Cowell said each finalist would sing a duet with a surprise superstar as part of Wednesday's competition.

The winner will be chosen by public vote and announced after a two-hour finale on Thursday.

All three finalists are expected to get recording contracts, but only the winner will be assured of the $5 million deal.

Judge and record producer Reid said he was proud and happy of the singers who had made it to the final after four months of nationwide auditions and live shows.

'They are all amazingly talented, unique in their own right (and) each one of them has a distinct competitive advantage,' Reid said.

'I think they represent us well. They look very modern, big on talent and loads of charisma, so I couldn't be happier.'

Meanwhile Cowell conceded he was over probably 'too cocky' when he launched the U.S. TV talent show earlier this year, boasting it would overtake his old program, No. 1-rated American Idol.

But Cowell, who admits being confident by nature, pledged that the two-part X Factor finale this week will be worth watching and any of the three finalists is worthy of the unprecedented prize of a $5 million recording contract.

The acerbic British entrepreneur judge said that Justin Bieber, rapper Pitbull and R&B singer Ne-Yo would be among the superstars performing on Thursday's finale, before the winner of the first season is revealed.

The X Factor launched in the United States in September after months of hype from Cowell, who predicted it would beat American Idol as the most-watched show on U.S. TV.

He had his reasons for the boast. X Factor, after all, has been the most popular TV show in Britain for several years and winners have generally gone straight to the top of the pop music charts.

In the U.S., American Idol is no different, and Cowell was a key force behind its success.

Yet, X Factor has underperformed Cowell's expectations.

Although it has been a hit for broadcaster Fox drawing about 12 million viewers weekly, its audience is less than half that of American Idol, which returns to Fox in January.

'I think I probably came here a little too cocky, but I am cocky by nature. I had come off the back of a massive hit in the U.K., had the adrenaline (and) couldn't wait to put the show on here, and it is going to take a little longer than I thought,' Cowell said at a news conference ahead of the final.

'But with these three finalists ... this will be the greatest final we have ever been in ... This is $5 million talent here,' he said.

'We are going to put on a show this week. And it's going to be better next year.'

She took to the stage performing her new song and stepped out in no less than three figure-hugging ensembles, so tonight should have been Nicole Scherzinger’s time to shine.

But the X Factor judge was upstaged by none other than her fellow judge Paula Abdul.

The 49-year-old stole the show in a miniscule silver and gold dress, which left little to the imagination.

The glittering number certainly showed off plenty of leg but emphasised her ample cleavage with plunging neckline.

Paula, who was the only judge without an act in tonight’s semi-final show, ensured she was still part very much part of the action.

As Marcus Canty was told he was heading home Paula made her way to the front of the stage to congratulate Nicole.

Earlier as Steve Jones had tried to talk to LA Reid, Marcus and Chris Rene Paula was seen making her way into shot interrupting the conversation to kiss the men.

Perhaps Paula was simply ensuring she caught Simon Cowell’s attention, after he admitted he had nearly had sex with her in an interview yesterday.

But who could blame the singer for wanted to show off her incredible figure which would leave women more than half her age envious.

Whatever the reason all eyes were firmly focused on Paula.

Nicole also displayed her fabulous figure in her three ensembles arriving out on stage in one shoulder white dress with ruffled detail.

Taking to the stage to perform her song Pretty Nicole mixed things up with a pair of tight leather trousers a plunging tuxedo top and an intricate silver necklace that hang around her chest.

As she returned to the stage Nicole showcased her third and final outfit for the evening a purple backless gown which caressed her figure to perfection.

Nicole wasn't the only performance of the evening and viewers were treated to Florence and The Machine who sang Spectrum.

Marcus Canty was voted out of the competition leaving Chris Rene, Melanie Amaro and Josh Krajcik to battle it out in the final next week.
