She's got the X, Y and Z Factor! Nicole Scherzinger steals Simon Cowell's attention away from Paula Abdul in a sizzlingly short dress

Last week it was Paula Abdul who stole the spotlight in a daringly minuscule dress.

But Nicole Scherzinger was clearly not planning on getting upstaged again tonight as she slipped into her own eye-catching ensemble for an X Factor USA press conference in Los Angeles.

The 33-year-old talent judge looked stunning in the low-cut, zipped cream outfit - while Paula, 49, covered up in a similar-coloured trouser suit.

A certain Simon Cowell appeared to be quite enamoured by Ms Scherzinger as the pair cosied up for cameras.

In one amusing pose the 52-year-old X Factor boss is seen stood between Nicole and Paula, with his hands raised questioningly.

Cowell recently admitted that he almost bedded Abdul - but tonight he seemingly only had eyes for the stunning former Pussycat Doll.

Along with fourth judge LA Reid, the panel were on hand to chat at a press conference ahead of this week's season finale.

Ballad singer Melanie Amaro, 19, bluesy Josh Krajcik, 30, and rapper Chris Rene, 28, will sing for the X Factor prize on Wednesday.

Cowell said each finalist would sing a duet with a surprise superstar as part of Wednesday's competition.

The winner will be chosen by public vote and announced after a two-hour finale on Thursday.

All three finalists are expected to get recording contracts, but only the winner will be assured of the $5 million deal.

Judge and record producer Reid said he was proud and happy of the singers who had made it to the final after four months of nationwide auditions and live shows.

'They are all amazingly talented, unique in their own right (and) each one of them has a distinct competitive advantage,' Reid said.

'I think they represent us well. They look very modern, big on talent and loads of charisma, so I couldn't be happier.'

Meanwhile Cowell conceded he was over probably 'too cocky' when he launched the U.S. TV talent show earlier this year, boasting it would overtake his old program, No. 1-rated American Idol.

But Cowell, who admits being confident by nature, pledged that the two-part X Factor finale this week will be worth watching and any of the three finalists is worthy of the unprecedented prize of a $5 million recording contract.

The acerbic British entrepreneur judge said that Justin Bieber, rapper Pitbull and R&B singer Ne-Yo would be among the superstars performing on Thursday's finale, before the winner of the first season is revealed.

The X Factor launched in the United States in September after months of hype from Cowell, who predicted it would beat American Idol as the most-watched show on U.S. TV.

He had his reasons for the boast. X Factor, after all, has been the most popular TV show in Britain for several years and winners have generally gone straight to the top of the pop music charts.

In the U.S., American Idol is no different, and Cowell was a key force behind its success.

Yet, X Factor has underperformed Cowell's expectations.

Although it has been a hit for broadcaster Fox drawing about 12 million viewers weekly, its audience is less than half that of American Idol, which returns to Fox in January.

'I think I probably came here a little too cocky, but I am cocky by nature. I had come off the back of a massive hit in the U.K., had the adrenaline (and) couldn't wait to put the show on here, and it is going to take a little longer than I thought,' Cowell said at a news conference ahead of the final.

'But with these three finalists ... this will be the greatest final we have ever been in ... This is $5 million talent here,' he said.

'We are going to put on a show this week. And it's going to be better next year.'

Leggy Nicole Scherzinger wears her own orange and purple X Factor outfit

Now THIS is how you wear those colours, Cheryl: Leggy Nicole Scherzinger rubs in the hurt over Cole's disastrous orange and purple X Factor outfit

After lasting a mere four auditions, the most enduring image of Cheryl Cole's American X Factor career is perhaps the controversial orange and purple outfit she wore on her first day.

And after the Geordie star was slated for her bold colour blocking, it appears her replacement Nicole Scherzinger has taken it upon herself to teach Cole a lesson on how to wear it well.

It might have been a coincidence that the former Pussycat Doll had a stab at wearing the clashing colours as she arrived to auditions in Miami, but nonetheless it sent a strong message to her predecessor.

Despite wearing the same colours as the 27-year-old Girls Aloud star, Nicole sexed up the look in her tiny purple mini skirt and seductive orange top.

She elongated her legs in tan suede heels and curled her hair just enough for a beachy look - without looking overly blow dried as Cole had previously.

Nicole's outfit choice was a final blow to Cheryl, after speculation that the Brit's dream of surviving Stateside was shattered after some terrible wardrobe choices.

The 32-year-old upped the sex factor, wearing the tiny ensemble - in place of Cole's clownish Diane Von Furstenburg flares.

Nicole's outfit, which was in reverse colour to the one Kim Kardashian wore last week in London, was peach coloured on top and fastened together with a gold belt.

And the fans couldn't get enough of Nicole's enthusiastic personality as she amped up the atmosphere in Florida.

Cheryl has gone to ground since she was unceremoniously fired from her judging job on the American show.

But she did send flowers to Nicole and fellow judge Paula Abdul last week.

However she may be alarmed by reports today, from Scherzinger's former manager, claiming that Cheryl was only ever used as hype.

Jeff Haddad, who managed the former Pussycat Doll for 13 years, has alleged that Nicole was always going to be on the panel.

He claims that he had long discussions with Simon Cowell and Scherzinger was always a frontrunner for the judging panel job.

‘In my opinion, Simon always wanted Nicole as a judge. There was never a question that she wouldn’t get it’, Jeff told Heat Magazine.

He added: ‘Nicole was always going to be on that judging panel and Cheryl was just being used as a cog in the wheel to cause hype and publicise the show.’

The magazine reported that Mr Haddad doesn’t recall Cheryl’s name being mentioned during talks about the role.

After managing the star for over a decade, Haddad was apparently given the axe by Nicole shortly before her U.S. X Factor contract was signed, the magazine reported.

But in his opinion he said that Cheryl’s accent wouldn’t have been the issue and was rather an excuse for publicity.

Regarding being allegedly fired by Nicole, he said: ‘If you serve as someone’s manager and develop their career for over a decade and that person didn’t pay you after landing the biggest TV show of their career, what does that tell you?’

An X Factor spokesperson dismissed the ex-managers claims of a publicity stunt as 'complete and utter rubbish'.

Meanwhile, Simon Cowell has revealed that he will broadcast the footage of Cheryl Cole during her short stint on the US X Factor.

Her appearances at the two audition venues she attended are said to be shown when the series is aired in September.

Cowell told Sky News: ‘We will show it. I mean it’s reality TV. There’s no point lying about it. It is what it is.’

He added: ‘It wasn’t really such a big deal as everybody thought. We have a lot of other shows. Something happened so we said, ‘Do you want to return to the UK show? ‘ and she said no.

‘The we offered her the show back and I don’t think she wanted to come back… Truth is you’ve got to move on. It’s about the contestants. They’ve got no interest in us bickering.’

Dermot O'Leary snubbed as former T4 presenter Steve Jones joins Nicole Scherzinger as co-hosts of X Factor USA

When Cheryl Cole was (finally) announced as a judge on the US version of the X Factor this week the response of many Americans was, 'Cheryl who?'

So the news today that former T4 presenter Steve Jones will be co-host of the high-profile American show comes as even more of a surprise.

The Welsh TV personality is to join Nicole Scherzinger in fronting Simon Cowell's latest venture, reports said today.

A formal announcement is expected in the next 24 hours, with the first auditions in front of the judging panel taking place in Los Angeles on Sunday.
The hiring of Jones, 34, may infuriate UK X Factor's Dermot O'Leary, who announced late last month that he was out of the running for the job after being told bosses at Fox wanted to hire 'an American.'
O'Leary, who had been vocal in his ambition to move stateside, said: 'I didn't get the US 'X Factor' job because they wanted an American.

'There's nothing I can do about that,' he told the Daily Star in April. 'I'm not upset any more. I've had time to get my head around it.'

High School Musical star Corbin Bleu was tipped as the hot favourite in American media for the role.

Jones, who left Channel 4 in November after ten years, said of the position recently: 'Of course I would love to do it. I'm a big X Factor fan.'

He added: ‘It's one of the biggest - probably the biggest - jobs in presenting at the moment.'

The news that Steve, who famously dated Pamela Anderson in 2004, had landed the highly-coveted role was leaked on Twitter this morning when DJ Edith Bowman wrote: 'The Brits invade. Steve Jones is gonna host the American X Factor I hear. Well bl**** done you Mr Jones. And a Pussycat Doll to co-host possibly?’

Ever since her success as a guest judge on last year's X Factor, Nicole Scherzinger has been a hot favourite for the US version.

Speculation was fierce that the former Pussycat Dolls singer would pip Cheryl Cole to a spot on the panel, but with Cheryl confirmed and already in LA today, it was a hosting role for Nicole.

During an appearance on Lorraine earlier this year, the singer spoke about her desire to be on the show.

'I have no idea what is going on, but I think that if they did ask me to do it I would definitely be honoured,' she said.

Speaking about her time as a guest judge Nicole said: 'That whole experience was so new to me, but it was fun and I guess if anyone can empathise with what they are going through – I’ve been through the exact same audition process, that’s how I got my big break in the US.

'And it’s what I love more than anything in the world, so why wouldn’t I be excited? I was happy to be a part of the show.'

Paula Abdul, the hot favourite to take the final judge's chair, is still awaiting her fate in last-minute negotiations, US media outlets reported today.
