Lady Gaga has a few less fans among the Catholic faithful, thanks to her controversial new song Judas.
The singer, 25, takes on the Bible in the forthcoming music video for the single, in which she portrays Mary Magdalene and actor Norman Reedus stars as Judas, who is well known among Christians as the apostle who betrayed Jesus.
The song, which was released yesterday, has outraged religious figures because of the apparently blasphemous tone of the lyrics where Gaga sings that she is 'in love with Judas'.
Lady Gaga does it again: The controversial singer's new single Judas has sparked outrage among the Catholic faithful
Gaga was raised in the Roman Catholic faith and even attended a convent school as a teenager. The accompanying video to the track is due to be released later this month - but the song has already angered the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights.
Located in New York, it is the largest Catholic civil rights organization in U.S.
Bill Donohue, the group's president has accused the star of using shock tactics and Christian idolatry to advance her career.
Stirring up emotions: Lady Gaga has controversy with everything from her costumes to her lyrics
The newly released single includes such lyrics as 'I want to love you,/but something’s pulling me away from you/Jesus is my virtue, and Judas is the demon I cling to….I’m just a holy fool,/ oh baby he’s so cruel,/ but I’m still in love with Judas, baby.'
But the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights were not amused.
'She is trying to rip off Christian idolatry to shore up her talentless, mundane and boring performances, ' Donohue said.
Lady Gaga's creative director Laurieann Gibson admits she almost walked away from co-directing the music video because of its heavy use of religious themes.
'I was like, "Listen, I don't want lightning to strike me!' " Gibson told the Hollywood Reporter.
But she remained on the project after receiving assurances.
The single was supposed to hit radio stations next week, but because of a series leaks, Lady Gaga released it to iTunes yesterday.
She immediately took to Twitter to let her 9 million followers know by posting the message: 'NEW SINGLE JUDAS! GET IT HERE. Monsters, thank you for inspiring me to write this song. Blood, Sweat + Jüdas.'
According to iTunes, the song is a huge hit and is currently the website's top selling single.
