Top Of The Pops back again for Christmas

12:31 | Friday December 9, 2011
Top Of The Pops is returning to TV screens for its annual Christmas Day appearance with a studio line-up exclusively comprising UK artists.
Although the show was axed after more than 42 years as a weekly fixture in July 2006, it has continued to have a presence on the BBC One December 25 schedules ever since and this year is no exception with the programme due to go out that day between 2 and 3pm.

Being recorded this Monday (December 12) at BBC Television Centre in London, the hour-long programme will include among its performers Example, Pixie Lott, Rizzle Kicks, Ed Sheeran, The Wanted and Will Young. Professor Green featuring Emeli Sande, Olly Murs, Noah & The Whale, The Vaccines and whoever wins The X Factor final on Sunday will also feature.
The way the calendar falls this year with December 25 on a Sunday means the Official Charts Company’s Christmas chart will come out on Christmas Day itself and Top Of The Pops is due to unveil who is number one on the countdown just before the Queen’s Christmas Message is screened.

The programme will be hosted by Fearne Cotton and Radio 1 Top 40 host Reggie Yeates who said: “Hosting the yearly specials of Top Of The Pops with Fearne Cotton is one of the highlights of my year; it’s always such a thrill to present such a loved show.”
Cotton added: “I’m so happy Top of the Pops is back for another Christmas special. It’s a wonderful tradition that I’m so proud to be part of. Great bands, live music and a sprinkling of fake snow thrown in to the mix! It’ll be lovely teaming up with my old mate Reggie Yates again, too. See you Christmas Day.”

In addition to the Christmas Day special, BBC Two will screen what is being billed as an affectionate tribute to the first ever Top Of The Pops host Sir Jimmy Savile who died in October just two days before what would have been his 85th birthday. Sir Jimmy Savile at the BBC: How About That Then? will include archive material from the legendary music show and will go out on what was its traditional airtime of 7pm on a Thursday on December 28.

Merry Christmas London! Rihanna closes day one of the Jingle Bell Ball with sultry performance

The current queen of pop made a return to the Jingle Bell Ball in London and was back to her old tricks.

Rihanna unveiled a new blonde hairstyle which looked like it may have been a wig as she closed day one of the festive concert yesterday.

The We Found Love singer performed a set full of hits at the O2 Arena and strutted around the stage scantily dressed.

Riri wore a pair of extra tiny black shorts with fishnet tights and a houndstooth wrap hanging from her waist.

She managed to stay on her feet despite rocking an extremely high pair of black ankle boots.

The 23-year-old flashed her midriff as she gyrated across the stage and entertained the audience.

Flanked by some denim clad dancers the Bajan performed tracks from her latest album Talk That Talk as well as others including What's My Name? and Umbrella.

The host for the event was radio presenter Lisa Snowdon.

The model wore an orange dress that also had a cape attached to it.

She held the whole day together and introduced all of the acts before they took to the stage.

The opening day began with The Xtra Factor host Olly Murs performing Dance With Me Tonight.

Wearing a checked shirt and a trilby he also sang Heart Skips A Beat and was then joined on the track by special surprise guests Rizzle Kicks.

The duo then stayed on stage and gave a rendition of their own hit song, Down With The Trumpets.

Olly, who had to rush off to present Xtra Factor, had tweeted about his busy schedule earlier in the day and said: 'Arrived back in London!! HUGE Day ahead!! Am doing @CapitalOfficial Jingle Bell Ball tonight!! Opening show then back for XTRA Factor!! (sic).'

American singer Jason Derulo was next up and he performed a selection of his best selling singles in a glittery silver jacket.

Pixie Lott followed shortly after and opened with Boys And Girls which had the crowd singing along through out.

The blonde 20-year-old wore a short black dress with ankle boots.

She told the crowd that it felt 'great' to be back at Jingle Bell Ball.

The multi-talented Labrinth gave perhaps the most rousing set of the evening.

Labrinth surprised the crowd when he sang his own version of Chris Brown's Beautiful People and got a great reaction from them.

He also performed his debut single Let The Sunshine as well as Pass Out and an acoustic version of Frisky.

When he ended his set with Earthquake the arena erupted and the audience went crazy for his number two hit.

DJ and producer Calvin Harris performed a turntable based set ahead of boy band The Wanted.

The Warzone singers made an unconventional entrance on to the stage by walking through the mostly female crowd.

Some lucky fans managed to get a kiss of the boys as Jay, Tom, Max, Siva and Nathan were pulled and grabbed in all directions.

The Jungle Bell Ball continues tomorrow with One Direction, Wretch 32 and JLS.

Janet Devlin loses place in semi-final as she becomes the latest X Factor casualty

Remembering the lyrics may have helped? Janet Devlin loses place in semi-final as she becomes the latest X Factor casualty

By Nadia Mendoza

Despite the strength in numbers of regional voting, Janet Devlin lost her place in The X Factor semi-final tonight.

After battling Misha B in the bottom two, it seems her native Ireland couldn't save her.

It comes as little surprise, considering she forgot the lyrics to her first song last night while performing Hanson track MMMBop in the Guilty Pleasures round.

The redhead performed well in the sing-off, tapping into the innocence of her very first audition with a rendition of Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol.

But as Misha B belted out a hit from the Fame soundtrack, nailing her version of Out Here On My Own by Irene Cara, it was clear who was going to be saved.

Judge Louis Walsh said: 'It's getting tougher and tougher. I'm taking everything into consideration, judging on last night's two performances and the sing-off. The act I'm sending home is Janet.'

Fellow panellist Tulisa Contostavlos followed his lead, saying: 'I'm going to base my decision on the person who has a career after the show, who will sell records and sellout arenas.

'I'm sorry to say I'm sending home Janet.'

Their mentor Kelly Rowland turned on the waterworks, refusing to decide between the two.

She said: 'I know how great these two young ladies are. Janet, I admire you as a musician and you bring something so unique to the music industry. I absolutely love you and adore you.

'Misha, my goodness girl, you just want this so bad. I have to pass it, I'm sorry.'

This meant that the majority verdict overruled, without Gary Barlow even having his say as Dermot O'Leary declared Janet was going home.

However, when O'Leary later quizzed Barlow, he said: 'I'd have sent Janet home.'

Janet simply said: 'I'm feeling very confused. I can't wait to leave the show and get my music out there.'

The show opened with guest appearances from Olly Murs and Jessie J, before the live show finalists sang charity single Wishing On A Star - which saw the return of Craig Colton and Sophie Habibis.

JLS and One Direction joined the contestants onstage, after they were called in at the last minute by Simon Cowell in a bid to boost sales on the track in honour of Together For Short Lives.

Dermot announced: 'Good news. The chancellor has decided to waive VAT on the single, so all money will go to charity.'

Little Mix, Amelia Lily, Marcus Collins and Misha B will now compete in the semi-final next week.

Singing sensation Adele conquered as Best Independent Artist, which may soften the blow of losing out on the Mercury Prize to PJ Harvey earlier this month.

While the champions were largely dominated by UK winners, Californian Bruno Mars walked away with the award for Best International Artist.

Rising star Ed Sheeran was acknowledged as Breakthrough Artist Of The Year, while the Kaiser Chiefs came up top for Best Artist Promotion following the launch of their latest album The Future is Medieval; which let fans create their own version of the album and sell it on to their friends.

Looks like someone had a good time! Pixie Lott leaves the Sainbury's festival stage with red lipstick smeared all over her face

By Sarah Fitzmaurice

Last updated at 12:51 AM on 11th September 2011

She started her performance looking red hot as she took to the stage in a short crimson skirt and a tight floral basque.

But by the end of the set Pixie Lott had managed to smear her red lipstick all over her face, for a look that was less alluring.

The singer, 20, left the stage at Sainsbury's Super Sunday festival with her bright lip colouring covering her lips above her mouth and even had some on her nose.

Pixie is currently sitting pretty at the top of the iTunes chart with her single All About Tonight, and she was also winning in the style stakes too.

The singer showed off her trim legs in the short skirt which she teamed a pair of black ankle boots, red lips and smoky eyes.

The singer treated fans to a set, including her latest release which is on track to take the number one spot tomorrow.

Pixie’s boyfriend Oliver Cheshire was seen in the VIP area picking up food before heading backstage making the most of the tasty barbeque treats on offer for revelers attending the Sainsbury’s event held at Clapham Common.

And it isn’t just Pixie who was hoping their new singles chart well tomorrow with The Saturdays and Olly Murs performing at the festival too.

Frankie, Rochelle, Vanessa, Una and Mollie had high hopes for their single All Fired Up and had hoped that it would give them their first number one.

But they currently sit at number three on the chart behind Pixie and also Maroon 5, making the top spot unlikely tomorrow.

Una teamed her maroon hot pants with a striped blouse and a cropped leather jacket while Vanessa donned a red waterfall hem dress with a waistbelt and a contrasting baseball jacket.

Frankie showed off her legs in a pretty floral skirt and a purple vest while Rochelle donned a flowing floral gown with a brown waistbelt.

Meanwhile Xtra Factor host Olly Murs is at number five with his song Heart Skips a Beat.

The Sugababes, who performed earlier in the day, made sure they got noticed in colour coordinating tight and bright outfits for their set.

After their performance the group changed into more comfortable clothes and were seen mingling in the VIP area.

The Wanted put on a cheeky performance, which went down well with the crowd, particularly when they sang their upcoming single Lightening for the first time.
N-Dubz rapper Dappy, who has been at the centre of an argument between bandmate Tulisa and the mother of his children last week, was also performing dressed in a camouflage tracksuit.

There were plenty of reality TV stars too with Jessica Wright and her mother from the TOWIE along with Nanny Pat and Made In Chelsea's Funda Onal and Cheska Hull, and Alex Reid who were seen tucking into the champagne and cocktails on offer in the VIP area.

The not-for-profit event marked one year to go until the London 2012 Paralympic Games and many athletes were seen enjoying the festivities and showing off their sporting skills.
