Victory for the brunette brigade as Duchess of Cambridge and Pippa Middleton are named top beauty icons of 2011

Kate Middleton has been voted the top beauty icon of 2011 - beating sister Pippa into second place.

Kate, who became the Duchess of Cambridge when she married Prince William in April, came out top in a poll of 3,000 women.

The 29-year-old Duchess has become recognised as increasingly style savvy throughout the year, appearing impeccably turned-out at various public occasions over the year.

Brunette brigade: Kate won over the 3,000 women polled with her trademark glossy brown locks and heavy eyeliner, while Pippa's perfect tan and natural make up earned her second place

Always immaculately groomed, Kate has remained true to the make up and hair style she has always favoured - albeit with a little more polish as her profile grows.

Her glossy brunette locks - tended to until recently by stylists from the Richard Ward salon in London - tumble about her shoulders with a subtle curl to the ends, and her dark eyeliner, which the Duchess famously applies with her own confident hand, completes her trademark look.

In second place was Kate's younger sister Pippa, 28, who shot to worldwide fame after images of her derriere in her Sarah Burton maid-of-honour dress were circulated globally in the days following her sister's nuptials.

Like Kate, she was hailed for her signature look of dark tan, glossy lips with fresh faced make-up.

Third place in the Superdrug poll went to last year's winner Cheryl Cole, who continues to win admirers despite having kept a low profile since her departure from American X Factor.

Sara Wolverson, Superdrug Director of beauty, who commissioned the research, said: 'What is fascinating is that four of the five celebrity women to appear in the top five are brunettes, which would indicate that while blondes may have more fun, brunettes are seen to be more beautiful.

Rihanna's exotic look earned her fourth place in the poll
Topping the polls: Last year's winner Cheryl Cole came in third place, while Rihanna's exotic beauty won her fourth place

'Everyone in the list has a distinct look, whether it's natural beauty, full octane glamour or a love of beauty trend-hopping.

'While the majority of ladies in the list are natural beauties, we also see the TOWIE effect with Amy Childs appearing on the list for the first time with her Essex tan, hair extensions, and false nails.'

The study also found Cheryl managed to nudge her replacement on the UK X Factor, judge Tulisa Contostavlos, down into sixth place.

Pop princess Rihanna and This Morning television presenter Holly Willoughby completed the top five beauty icons of 2011.

14. Katherine Jenkins
15. Nicole Scherzinger
16. Adele
17. Pixie Lott
18. Angelina Jolie

20. Scarlett Johannson

Seventh in the list is mother-to-be Beyonce who appears on the list for the first time, while Harry Potter's Emma Watson appears at number eight on the list.

With her pixie haircut, the young actress is the only woman in the top ten with short hair.

American singer and Mrs Russell Brand Katy Perry takes the number nine spot, cited for her quirky style, while mother-of-four and fashion icon Victoria Beckham completes the top ten.

New entries for 2011 include singers Lady Gaga at 12, Katherine Jenkins at 14 and Vogue cover girl Adele at 16.

Some who appeared in last year's list failed to appear this year, with Kylie Minogue, Fearne Cotton, Leona Lewis, Michelle Obama and Gemma Arterton all falling out of the top 20.

Sara Wolverson added: 'As always our Beauty Icons survey gives a snapshot of the changing face of British beauty.

'A key change for us is the continued rise of the brunette with three quarters of the top 20 sporting brown hair.

'We can see directly how changing celebrity trends affect our sales, from the 'Duchess effect' on sales of black eyeliner, to the 'Gaga effect' causing crazy nail art and our brightest cosmetics being a huge hit all year long, and Rihanna and Cheryl Cole's flirtation with vibrant red hair causing sales to rocket.'

2011 was another year of wacky celebrity baby names - but what 'outrageous' choices will stars make for 2012's new arrivals?

By Daisy Dumas

Last updated at 10:24 PM on 12th December 2011

While 2011 has been yet another year of kooky celebrity monikers, it's 2012's most highly anticipated new year babies that are already getting name commentators excited.

Perhaps most famous is Beyonce's and Jay-Z's progeny - and, though not due until February, the baby's name is the speculation of experts at Nameberry.com.

Expectations are high - with the invented Jay-Z and highly unusual Beyonce for parents' names, both of which are identifiers enough without surnames attached, Pamela Satran of Nameberry says she thinks 'it'll be something really outrageous.'

It's all in an name: Beyonce, due in February, has name exerts guessing as to what she and husband Jay-Z may choose for their celebaby
It's all in an name: Beyonce, due in February, has name exerts guessing as to what she and husband Jay-Z may choose for their celebaby

Ms Satran told MailOnline: 'I'm curious to see whether they'll invent a new name for their baby. I'm really excited to see what it is.'

Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck's son, due in January, is another baby in utero whose name already has those in the know guessing.

Choosing Violet and Seraphina for their two girls, his parents, according to to Ms Satran, 'have proved themselves to be baby naming masters.

'They picked obscure, unknown, old names and we've seen them zoom up the charts over the last five years.'

She says she and colleagues are excited to see what their next choice will be, her best guess for the baby boy something in the same vein: 'I think they'll choose an old name, something surprising, cool and right.'

Whatever it may be, the name is sure to be imitated over and over, she says.

Not long now: A heartily pregnant Jennifer Garner spotted Christmas shopping last week. Experts expect her son's name, like her past name choices, will spark a new trend
Not long now: A heartily pregnant Jennifer Garner spotted Christmas shopping last week. Experts expect her son's name, like her past name choices, will spark a new trend

An overview of the year's celebrity baby names reveals a motley selection of unusual, often attention-grabbing choices.

Intentional or not, some name combinations have saluted bygone stars. As Ms Satran and colleague Linda Rosenkrantz say: 'Celine Dion appears to have inadvertently saluted stiff 1930’s operetta star Nelson Eddy with the combined names of her twin boys, while Niki Taylor (possibly unknowingly) paid tribute to Rex Harrison, the star of My Fair Lady.'

They have pointed out a mini-me moment, with Mike Myers' son's name choice: 'Mike and Spike? Really? Spike may be a rhyming tribute to his dad, yes, but also - we have to say - more often the name of a snarling bulldog or a Dead End Kid.'

The biggest trend seems to be the laudable search for personal meaning in names. So, where some celebs have delved into family history for inspiration - take 30 Rock's Tina Fey's referencing of her Greek ancestry when deciding upon Penelope Athena, for one - others have looked no further than... their decorative floor rugs for that a-ha moment.

'I like the overall trend of people looking for meaning in names. I'm more supportive of people looking for meaning in family than in rugs'

'Yes, it was room décor that inspired the name of Monroe’s twin brother—specifically the Moroccan-inspired décor of the top tier of Carey's New York apartment, the so-called Moroccan Room in which Cannon proposed,' explains the Nameberry founders.

'I like the overall trend of people looking for meaning in names. I'm more supportive of people looking for meaning in family than in rugs,' said Ms Satran.

Some of the more questionable options from the past year include Mirabella Bunny, daughter of Bryan Adams; and Bear Blu, son of Alicia Silverstone.

A hoard of gender-benders have put new twists on old names, such as Arlo, daughter of Johnny Knoxville and son of Toni Collette, Martha Stewart’s granddaughter Jude, Mariah Carey’s daughter Monroe, and quarterback Peyton Manning’s little girl Mosley Thompson.

Unsurprisingly, it's the more conventional names that have seen uptake among the general public, with Arabella, after Ivanka Trump's daughter, and Flynn, after Miranda Kerr and Orlando Bloom's son enjoying popularity on the names site.

Then there are some names that only the really physically blessed can pull off.

'Agnes Lark is not a conventionally attractive choice,' says Ms Satran of Jennifer Connelly and Paul Bettany's daughter.

'I probably wouldn't choose it but if you're Jennifer Connelly and you're sure your child is going to be beautiful, you might.'

'Let’s be honest, the kid is sure to be gorgeous, which will do much for Agnes’s somewhat harsh image,' say the pros.

'You can only imagine and multiply that,' she said.

In the meantime, Beyonce's unborn baby has been getting plenty of attention.

Couric, who placed a hand on the singer's growing bump, asked how many people touch her belly.

'Not as crazy as you imagine,' she laughed. But she did say that her family were constantly cradling her bump.

In the interview Couric also tried her hand at getting the singer to reveal the sex of the baby.

'Should I get you a pink baby present or a blue baby present?' she asked.

But Beyonce only coyly put her finger to her mouth and replied: 'Hmm...'

However Couric pressed, telling her that her bestfriend Kelly Rowland had already let the sex of the baby slip.

'Really?' Beyonce asked.

'She said that you were going to have a girl,' Couric laughed.

'Did she?' the singer hummed, once again holding her finger to her mouth.

Beyonce's interview with Couric was recorded at the Roseland theatre, where the Crazy in Love star played earlier this year.

Footage from the show was used for her new DVD Live At Roseland.

The video along with several montages of iconic moments in her life was edited by Beyonce herself.

But some of the images made Beyonce wince, especially footage of her as a 12-year-old in a girl group called Girls time.
'I see that and I just cringe when I see those old clips!' she laughs.
Images of Beyonce trying on her wedding dress prior to her 2008 marriage, also feature on the new DVD.
The footage also features shots of childhood memories, her award trophies, her earliest days as a performer and hugging Michael Jackson.

She's one of the most glamorous women in the world, and is rarely seen without a pair of killer heels.

But, as pregnant singer Beyoncé filmed a television special for ITV, she decided to try out a more casual look - teaming her sheer blue trousers and blouse with bare feet.

The 30-year-old singer looked confident as she performed some of her greatest hits, including Best Thing I Never Had, while perching on a stool.

Beyoncé's relaxed appearance is in sharp contrast to her usual immaculately groomed look, but suited the mother-to-be.

The exclusive performance, recorded in front of an audience of Beyoncé's biggest fans shortly before the superstar announced her pregnancy in August, also sees the former Destiny's Child singer treat fans to a question and answer session in between songs.

'Oh baby! Oh baby!': Beyonce brims with delight as she rubs her bump in behind-the-scenes video clip

Beyonce's countless fans are no doubt overjoyed by the impending arrival of her first child.

But no one is more thrilled about the pregnancy than the singer herself.

The 30-year-old is seen getting excited about her baby bump in a new behind-the-scenes video, which she posted on her YouTube page yesterday.

SCROLL DOWN FOR VIDEO...

In the 31 second clip, the star is seen rubbing her burgeoning belly, all whilst exclaiming 'oh baby, oh baby, oh baby, oh baby'.

Holding up a copy of The New York Daily News, Beyonce points to a red-carpet picture of herself on the front cover where her belly is on show in an elegant floor-length gown.

'This was on the cover of the Daily News,' she says excitedly.

Dressed om a tight-fitting roll neck sweater and her hair in a Sixties Mod-style, she then goes on to explain that she is shooting her new video, Countdown.

'Right now I am actually shooting the video of Countdown, and I am six months pregnant, pretending that my stomach is flat in body suits, hahaha,' she laughs.

'But thank god you can't really tell from the front, but when I turn to the side... Oh baby, oh baby!,' she says, as she once again happily clutches her bump.

Despite in her stomach looking flat in some images in the video, Beyonce actually incorporated her burgeoning belly in the stylish music clip.

In the video for the song, appropriately named Countdown, the star at one point turns to the side in a clinging black dress and shows off her blossoming tummy.

She sings: 'I’m tryin' to make us 3 from that 2' in the song, before three images of her displaying her bump are shown.

The star also shows off her new sidewards belly rubbing dance move which wowed the audience at MTV, when she first announced that she was pregnant.

She channels Audrey Hepburn in the video which sees her in a dark wig with a black fringe, cropped black trousers, and at one point, a black and white floppy hat, much like the actress in film My Fair Lady.

The video starts with a close up shot of the star in winged black eyeliner and false eyelashes.

A later shot shows her sporting bright green eyeshadow, and a pink lipsticked mouth which she curls up.

There's also a striking shot of the star standing against a black and white striped background, moving her arms in a clock style.

And clearly Countdown wouldn't be a Beyonce video without some flesh exposed.

Beyonce's baby bump has caused considerable controversy in recent weeks with critics analysing the size and shape of her pregnant figure in great detail.

Beyoncé first revealed her pregnancy at the MTV Video Music Awards in August, announcing it on the red carpet and again on stage as she patted her stomach after belting out a rendition of Love on Top.

She said: 'I want you to feel the love that's growing inside of me.'

But the authenticity of her baby bump came under fire after an interview on Australian television hinted that she was wearing a prosthetic bump.

As she sat down during the chat with local TV personality Molly Meldrum on the Sunday Night programme, it appeared the bump got squashed.

Just days later she caused another furore on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon performing with a flat stomach: only to explain that it was pre-recorded.

Doubts however should be laid to rest over the issue as Beyoncé shows it off in this new behinds-the-scenes clip.

'Should I get you a pink baby present or a blue baby present?' she asks Beyonce, who coyly puts her finger to her mouth and replies 'Hmm...'

Following the interview, Couric tweeted her excitement about interviewing the singer.

'I loved BEYONCE. I first met her when she was 18 and she's still humble + incredibly sweet But strong as well!' she wrote on the social networking site.

The secret of the sex of Beyonce's baby may well already be out.

Earlier this month, Beyonce's best friend Kelly Rowland recently let slip in an interview that the Crazy In Love singer is expecting a little girl next year.

'I have no idea what I'm going to buy Beyoncé at the baby shower because Jay is going to buy that little girl every single thing possible,' the 30-year-old singer said.

Speaking at the Cosmopolitan Ultimate Women of the Year Awards 2011 in London, Kelly added about the baby: 'She won't be spoiled but she will be very well looked after.

'I'll be on hand for babysitting duties and I'm actually very good with messy diapers!'

Kelly, who was a part of hit group Destiny's Child alongside Beyonce and Michelle Williams, is clearly looking forward to her friend's new arrival.

'I'm so happy for my sister and her husband,' she said. 'They're so happy in this moment right now, as they should be.

'They've made a little bundle of love, I'm so excited for them.

She opted for a striking Sixties style for her last video Countdown.

Now Beyonce is harking back to the Forties era for her next cinematic offering, Dance For You.

In the clip, which has a distinct Film Noir style, the singer is seen doing possibly some of her most provocative moves yet.

Watched by a mystery man in a Forties-style Fedora hat and braces, the star wears a slinky and revealing satin dress paired with suspenders and stocking as she writhes all over a desk in an office setting.

Later she takes the sexy show to an armchair, where she proceeds with the seductive private dance all while exposing her vintage-style underwear.

A glowing light on the singer indicates that she is being filmed by an old school motion picture video camera.

It appears that the clip was filmed before she became pregnant.

Her new racy music video will be featured in the deluxe edition of Beyonce's Live at Roseland DVD special, which is slated to be released on November 29.

The R&B track is also part of bonus material on the singer's deluxe version of her album 4.

In the song, Beyonce sings about treating her man.

'Tonight I'm gonna dance for you/ Tonight I'm gonna dance for you/ Tonight I'm gonna put my body on your body/ Boy, I like it when you watch me/ Tonight it's going down,' she purrs.

Beyonce's Live at Roseland DVD special also shows her performance last August at the famed Roseland Ballroom for four nights. The tickets sold out in a record 22 seconds.

The entire Beyonce: Live At Roseland concert is now being streamed on VEVO and VEVO@YT, viewable worldwide, on Beyonce's Vevo channel - BeyonceVEVO.

Beyonce also just released a new montage video of iconic moments, including trying on her wedding dress prior to her 2008 marriage, which will feature on her new DVD.

The footage features shots of childhood memories, her award trophies, her earliest days as a performer and hugging Michael Jackson.

As she addresses her fans in the opening of the clip before singing I Was Here, she says: 'It's taken a lot of hard work to get to where I am.

'I searched all around the world and found myself. You're my inspiration.'

Beyonce is currently pregnant with her first child with husband rapper Jay-Z.

And already it seems that the bub to be will be lavished with only the best upon it's arrival.

Earlier this month the couple took delivery of a $5000 Swarovski crystal-studded baby bath from Beyonce's former Destiny’s Child bandmate turned X Factor judge Kelly Rowland.

The 3,000lb porcelain tub is studded with 44,928 crystals that Californian interior designer Lori Gardner spent more than two months applying by hand.

Jay-Z, 42, revealed in a chat with America's GQ magazine that he intends to be a hands-on dad, after his own father walked out on him at 11.

He said: 'Providing - that's not love. Being there - that's more important. We see that with all these rich socialites.

'They're crying out for attention; they're hurting for love. 'I'm not being judgmental, I'm just making an observation.'
