Victory for the brunette brigade as Duchess of Cambridge and Pippa Middleton are named top beauty icons of 2011

Kate Middleton has been voted the top beauty icon of 2011 - beating sister Pippa into second place.

Kate, who became the Duchess of Cambridge when she married Prince William in April, came out top in a poll of 3,000 women.

The 29-year-old Duchess has become recognised as increasingly style savvy throughout the year, appearing impeccably turned-out at various public occasions over the year.

Brunette brigade: Kate won over the 3,000 women polled with her trademark glossy brown locks and heavy eyeliner, while Pippa's perfect tan and natural make up earned her second place

Always immaculately groomed, Kate has remained true to the make up and hair style she has always favoured - albeit with a little more polish as her profile grows.

Her glossy brunette locks - tended to until recently by stylists from the Richard Ward salon in London - tumble about her shoulders with a subtle curl to the ends, and her dark eyeliner, which the Duchess famously applies with her own confident hand, completes her trademark look.

In second place was Kate's younger sister Pippa, 28, who shot to worldwide fame after images of her derriere in her Sarah Burton maid-of-honour dress were circulated globally in the days following her sister's nuptials.

Like Kate, she was hailed for her signature look of dark tan, glossy lips with fresh faced make-up.

Third place in the Superdrug poll went to last year's winner Cheryl Cole, who continues to win admirers despite having kept a low profile since her departure from American X Factor.

Sara Wolverson, Superdrug Director of beauty, who commissioned the research, said: 'What is fascinating is that four of the five celebrity women to appear in the top five are brunettes, which would indicate that while blondes may have more fun, brunettes are seen to be more beautiful.

Last year's winner Cheryl Cole came in third place
Rihanna's exotic look earned her fourth place in the poll
Topping the polls: Last year's winner Cheryl Cole came in third place, while Rihanna's exotic beauty won her fourth place

'Everyone in the list has a distinct look, whether it's natural beauty, full octane glamour or a love of beauty trend-hopping.

'While the majority of ladies in the list are natural beauties, we also see the TOWIE effect with Amy Childs appearing on the list for the first time with her Essex tan, hair extensions, and false nails.'

The study also found Cheryl managed to nudge her replacement on the UK X Factor, judge Tulisa Contostavlos, down into sixth place.

Pop princess Rihanna and This Morning television presenter Holly Willoughby completed the top five beauty icons of 2011.

1. Kate Middleton
2. Pippa Middleton
3. Cheryl Cole
4. Rihanna
5. Holly Willoughby
6. Tulisa Contostavlos
7. Beyonce
8. Emma Watson
9. Katy Perry

11. Kelly Rowland
12. Lady Gaga
13. Amy Childs
14. Katherine Jenkins
15. Nicole Scherzinger
16. Adele
17. Pixie Lott
18. Angelina Jolie
19. Keira Knightley
20. Scarlett Johannson

Seventh in the list is mother-to-be Beyonce who appears on the list for the first time, while Harry Potter's Emma Watson appears at number eight on the list.

With her pixie haircut, the young actress is the only woman in the top ten with short hair.

American singer and Mrs Russell Brand Katy Perry takes the number nine spot, cited for her quirky style, while mother-of-four and fashion icon Victoria Beckham completes the top ten.

New entries for 2011 include singers Lady Gaga at 12, Katherine Jenkins at 14 and Vogue cover girl Adele at 16.

Some who appeared in last year's list failed to appear this year, with Kylie Minogue, Fearne Cotton, Leona Lewis, Michelle Obama and Gemma Arterton all falling out of the top 20.

Sara Wolverson added: 'As always our Beauty Icons survey gives a snapshot of the changing face of British beauty.

'A key change for us is the continued rise of the brunette with three quarters of the top 20 sporting brown hair.

'We can see directly how changing celebrity trends affect our sales, from the 'Duchess effect' on sales of black eyeliner, to the 'Gaga effect' causing crazy nail art and our brightest cosmetics being a huge hit all year long, and Rihanna and Cheryl Cole's flirtation with vibrant red hair causing sales to rocket.'

Thanks for all your support! Tulisa toasts her close knit crew as she takes them for drinks to celebrate her PA's birthday

She's spent the past three weeks revelling in Little Mix's X Factor win and raising several glasses to the success of the group she mentored throughout the competition.

And with the Christmas season upon us, Tulisa Contostavlos shows no sign of having any cosy nights in just yet as she was snapped out on the town again last night.

But this time, it had nothing to do with her 'little muffins' or the festive season, but gave her a chance to hang out, catch up and toast her close friends as they celebrated her PA's birthday.

Tulisa, 23, was joined by her crew for a bash held at the Mahiki nightclub in London for Gareth Varey's birthday and by all accounts, much fun was had by all.

Tulisa and Gareth were joined by DJ Ironik - real name James Christian Charters - stylists Abuk Joseph and Mekel Bailey and choreographer Levi Hibbert, as they let their hair down and toasted his birthday.

They all looked like they were having a good time as they crowded round a bucket of drinks for photographs.

Tulisa looked very pretty in her strapless monochrome dress with an unusual neckline, her long dark locks loose around her shoulders.

Tulisa and Gareth were seen leaving the club in the small hours looking a little worse for wear as they bundled into a waiting cab.

No wonder really, if her Tweet at the start of proceedings was a hint at what the night would bring.

She wrote: 'Just poured the first drink of the night for @GarethVarey 's birthday, its 10pm, we got about 5 hours to go.....this could get messy.'

A few hours later, the birthday boy himself took to her Twitter page to thank everyone, including Tulisa, for coming along and helping him celebrate, and wrote: 'THE most amazing night!!! Love my friends!!!!'

Apart from all the parties and her amazing X Factor win with Little Mix, the first group to ever win the competition, Tulisa has yet another reason to celebrate this week.

According to reports, the N-Dubz star is set to pen her autobiography, even though she is only 23.

According to The Mirror, she will start writing the book in January and hopes to release it to coincide with the start of the next series of the X Factor.

The story claims three publishers are fighting to sign the singer, who could make £1.2million.

In the book, Tulisa could go into detail about her feud with fellow judge Kelly Rowland and her working relationship with the likes of Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole and Louis Walsh.

She will also talk about her childhood, her rise to fame with N-Dubz and will include never-before-seen photographs.

A source told the newspaper: 'Tulisa may only be 23 but she’s had an amazingly eventful life. She has an incredible story to tell – some of which has never been written about – and it’s a unique opportunity to set the record straight.'

'Tulisa’s famed for being open and up front, saying it as she sees it. There will be no skeletons left in her closet. Dannii Minogue’s autobiography was a number-one best-seller whilst Cheryl’s two last year were also top-five smashes.'

Little Mix fans left disappointed after X Factor winners release montage video to accompany debut single Cannonball

They've had a pretty busy time of it since winning the X Factor three weeks ago with promotional trips, interviews and signings galore.

After Little Mix's debut song Cannonball went straight to number one, fans eagerly awaited the video to accompany the track, hoping to see the girls away from the stage and acting like real pop stars.

But after it was released today, the reception to it was rather lukewarm after fans complained it was just a hash-job of their X Factor journey.

Number one: Little Mix sing Cannonball in their music video to accompany the single - but the footage is just taken from their X Factor final performance
Number one: Little Mix sing Cannonball in their music video to accompany the single - but the footage is just taken from their X Factor final performance

Like previous videos from X Factor winners, it is a montage made up of various clips from the minute they were put together as a band, to the auditions at the judges' house right through to their win.

But unlike previous videos, there are no external scenes of the girls, either singing in a studio, a back drop or surrounded by some romantic lighting.

Instead, the entire three minutes and 33 seconds video is made up of a cuts job of their best bits on the show.

They have had a very busy three weeks since their victory so probably haven't had the time record a music video.

Moment of truth: The girls are led out by mentor Tulisa Contostavlos along with Gary Barlow and his act Marcus Collins

However, in previous years, the three finalists would record a video in the final week, so it could hit the music channels 24 hours after the winner is announced.

But instead, Little Mix fans have had to make do with black and white and slow-motion shots of the band from the show.

And they took to their Twitter pages to bemoan the 'rip-off' video, with one saying: 'They have really gone all out in making the video for Little Mix's Cannonball #sarcasm.'
Another added: 'The Little Mix video is just like one of these fan videos on Youtube!'

And one other said: 'ok so wtf is the Little Mix video about, they haven't even filmed any extra bits this year like they usually do and it doesn't play Dermot.'

Little Mix made the number one slot last Sunday but face stiff competition from the Military Wives' song Wherever You Are for the Christmas Number One.

Woman of the hour! Tulisa takes the limelight at the X Factor wrap party- and boyfriend Fazer is only too happy to let her

Her act Little Mix made X Factor history when they became the first girl group ever to win the show.

So Tulisa Contostavlos certainly deserved to enjoy the limelight at the show's wrap party last night.

And boyfriend Fazer was only too happy to let her, taking the sideline in a reserved black suit while Tulisa stole the show in eye-catching gold.

The 23-year-old showed off her figure in the figure-hugging one-shoulder dress from online brand Forever Unique, displaying her enviable curves.

Her sparkly ensemble made quite the contrast to Fazer's understated cool.

The rapper even wore sunglasses, presumably to shield his eyes from the glare of the photographer's flashes.

The pair were thick as thieves, though Fazer hung behind a little upon their arrival, letting Tulisa take the brunt of the paparazzis' attention.

Opposites attract? Tulisa's eye-catching ensemble made quite the contrast to Fazer's laid-back black

It appears a small understanding may have taken place however, as Tulisa tweeted later on: 'And as 4 the paps opening my car doors while I'm waiting 4 friends, any pics of me shoutin 2moz its cus I told them 2 get off the door!'

Not wanting to to be misrepresented she added: 'Not because ...n yes i can guess the headlines 'tulisa throws drunken strop' believe me I wish I'd had more 2 drink after that!#toosober'

The irritation didn't appear to detract from her night's enjoyment however, as she looked cheerful throughout.

Tulisa's understandably been in the mood to celebrate ever since her 'little muffins' made X Factor history by becoming the first girl group to take home the prize on Sunday.

Not so keen on the cameras? Fazer looked a little irritated by the attention, whereas Tulisa was only to happy to flash a smile

She tweeted in the early hours of Monday morning: 'what do ya do after ur act wins the xfactor?...go 2 ur local kebab shop of course, wooooiiiiii....LOVE U #LITTLEMIX keep it real'

But while she clutched on to her beau last night, there was no sign of their band mate Dappy, who had slated the show just hours after his cousin triumphed on the programme.

The rapper, who took to the stage at the Academy 2 in Manchester and told the audience at his gig on Sunday night: 'This is what fame is, not standing for hours outside to audition for X Factor', before launching into his new single Rockstar, which features Queen guitarist Brian May.

Dappy continued his tirade against X Factor boss Simon Cowell saying 'F*** Simon Cowell'.

And it appears his comments have left him out in the cold as Tulisa failed to invite him to the wrap party.

It may have been Little Mix who walked away with The X Factor crown, but that's not stopping the other contestants fighting to prolong their 15 minutes of fame.

The undignified bunch turned up to celebrate the end of the series at the season wrap party in London on Tuesday night.

And it was Amelia Lily and Sophie Habibis who left a lasting impression as they flashed their flesh and underwear for all to see.

'Comeback Kid' Amelia forgot to match her knickers to her hair when she accidentally revealed a bit too much at the bash.

Walking along with a huge grin on her face, Amelia appeared to be oblivious as she hooked her beige dress up to reveal her under garments.

The 17-year-old, who was also dressed in a black leather jacket, had decided to bare her legs despite the wintry weather.

And she may live to regret her choice as she grasped her blue clutch bag, as well as the hem of her skirt.

But she wasn't the only contestant who made an impact for the wrong reasons at the party.

Sophie Habibis, who was one of the first to be voted off the competition, stood out in an interesting coral mini dress with frayed floorlength hem.

But even the bright colour couldn't prevent all eyes heading to her chest.

The 19-year-old pushed her cleavage in to the strapless frock but her curves spilled out, revealing her black bra.

The singers were all celebrating the end of the show, which saw Gary Barlow's act Marcus Collins walk away with the runner's up prize.

How girls outshone the X Factor boys: Females topped vote each week but millions switch off

By Simon Neville

This year’s X Factor series proved to be a case of Girl Power reigning supreme.

The programme has released the voting percentages for the entire series, which show that female contestants were consistently more popular than the boys.

Irish teenager Janet Devlin received the most votes in the early weeks with eventual winners Little Mix not surging through until the latter stages of the competition.

X-Factor winners Little Mix (from l-r Jade, Jesy, Perrie, Leigh Ann) with female judge and mentor Tulisa Contoslavos (in blue dress, centre). Girls outshone the boys in this years program

In 2010, winner Matt Cardle topped the voting throughout the entire series.
But this year, three acts took turns to grab the public’s affections and lead the field.

Miss Devlin, 17, was the bookmakers’ early favourite to win the competition, topping the poll in the first four weeks.

This included securing nearly a quarter of the total votes cast in the first week of voting.

She came second in week six behind the reinstated Amelia Lily, 17, who replaced Frankie Cocozza, 18, after he was axed for boasting of drug-taking.

High performing girls: Janet Devlin, Misha Bryan and Amelia Lily stole the show at this year's X-Factor

But after a string of poor performances, including twice forgetting her words, Miss Devlin slipped back and her position was taken by Little Mix.

Miss Lily’s popularity was also confirmed in the figures, topping the poll twice and being runner-up once, as well as taking third place in the final. the overall runner-up Marcus Collins, 23, never topped the public vote.

His best performance came in week five, when he gained second place.

Misha Bryan, 19, widely thought to have the strongest voice on the show, and who finished fourth, had the most varied set of results.

In week three she came third, but a week later she was bottom of the poll.

In week seven she finished second, only to once again end up last in week eight.

The figures that really matter, however, are the ratings.

The final, which aired live from Wembley Arena in North London on Sunday evening, was down more than four million viewers on the previous year.

Marcus Collins
Frankie Cocozza
Outshone: Marcus Collins (left), 23 never topped the public vote while Franie Cocozza (right), 17, was booted from the show for boasting about drug taking

It had an average audience of 13.1million, according to overnight TV ratings figures. That compared unfavourably to the 17.2million who watched Matt Cardle triumph in the 2010 competition.

Indeed, it was the lowest average audience for the final of the series since 2007, when Leon Jackson won the show.

ITV could at least draw comfort from the series still being the third most successful in The X Factor’s history.

The final helped to boost the series average up to 11million viewers across the 17-week run. It was also the second most watched show on British TV this year, behind only the Royal Wedding in April.

ITV also pointed out that BBC1 rival Strictly Come Dancing had averaged 9.7million viewers this series.

However, Strictly’s finale does not take place until this weekend, which is likely to boost its overall viewing figures substantially.

And the winner is... Tulisa may have mentored Little Mix to victory, but Kelly is crowned style queen

By Maysa Rawi and Lauren Paxman

Little Mix were crowned the winners of The X Factor last night. But over the past 10 weeks another competition has been taking place... that of the most stylish judge.

Gary Barlow almost made the cut with a dapper collection of well-cut three-piece suits, but the real competition was between Tulisa and Kelly.

Here we look over the past 10 weeks and show how Kelly pipped Tulisa to the post - starting with this week-end's outfits which left the Little Mix mentor looking uncomfortable while Kelly, literally, shone.

Neither of the judges wore their most stylish outfits last night. Kelly's was too complicated and Tulisa's left her unable to walk
Neither Kelly nor Tulisa wore their most stylish dresses last night. Kelly's was too complicated and Tulisa's left her unable to walk

THE FINAL WEEKEND: KELLY WINS

Tulisa's tutu

Tulisa's dotty choice looked a little like she had borrowed it off a child, while Kelly played it a little too safe in Nicholas Oakwell

Tulis'as blue fishtail gown left her struggling to walk
Kelly's mullet dress
Tulisa's blue Fyodor Golan fishtail gown was not her most flattering dress, while Kelly's Julien Macdonald mullet dress was on trend but too complicated

Tulisa looked uncomfortable in both the frocks she chose to wear over the weekend.

On Saturday she struggled to fit all of her spotted tutu under the judges desk - and the short front sometimes threatened to reveal a little too much.

On Sunday, the blue Fyodor Golan fishtail dress was not her most flattering frock, and the tightness around the knees left Tulisa struggling to walk.

Kelly, went for a safe but stylish navy blue Nicholas Oakwell pleated frock on Saturday. But on Sunday she showed off her enviable pins with an on-trend mullet dress. The bespoke Julien Macdonald couture frock's platinum colour was great, but the golden detailing meant there was almost too much going on.

And how the judges compared for the rest of the competition...

WEEK ONE: KELLY WINS

For the opening show, Tulisa and Kelly opted for very different looks.

Kelly gets extra points for being so on-trend with the 90's style and has the figure to pull of the Versace dress.

Tulisa looked pretty in a nude Herve Leger dress.

For Sunday however, Tulisa's Vivienne Westwood dress is slightly too short.

Kelly opts for a demure look in a Todd Lynn burgundy dress, which although flattering, is missing the wow-factor.

Tulisa's leather-effect mullet dress is almost too big for her but she stole the show the following day, as Kelly's Julien Macdonald dress revealed too much cleavage.

WEEK THREE: KELLY WINS
