Victory for the brunette brigade as Duchess of Cambridge and Pippa Middleton are named top beauty icons of 2011

Kate Middleton has been voted the top beauty icon of 2011 - beating sister Pippa into second place.

Kate, who became the Duchess of Cambridge when she married Prince William in April, came out top in a poll of 3,000 women.

The 29-year-old Duchess has become recognised as increasingly style savvy throughout the year, appearing impeccably turned-out at various public occasions over the year.

Brunette brigade: Kate won over the 3,000 women polled with her trademark glossy brown locks and heavy eyeliner, while Pippa's perfect tan and natural make up earned her second place

Always immaculately groomed, Kate has remained true to the make up and hair style she has always favoured - albeit with a little more polish as her profile grows.

Her glossy brunette locks - tended to until recently by stylists from the Richard Ward salon in London - tumble about her shoulders with a subtle curl to the ends, and her dark eyeliner, which the Duchess famously applies with her own confident hand, completes her trademark look.

In second place was Kate's younger sister Pippa, 28, who shot to worldwide fame after images of her derriere in her Sarah Burton maid-of-honour dress were circulated globally in the days following her sister's nuptials.

Like Kate, she was hailed for her signature look of dark tan, glossy lips with fresh faced make-up.

Third place in the Superdrug poll went to last year's winner Cheryl Cole, who continues to win admirers despite having kept a low profile since her departure from American X Factor.

Sara Wolverson, Superdrug Director of beauty, who commissioned the research, said: 'What is fascinating is that four of the five celebrity women to appear in the top five are brunettes, which would indicate that while blondes may have more fun, brunettes are seen to be more beautiful.

Rihanna's exotic look earned her fourth place in the poll
Topping the polls: Last year's winner Cheryl Cole came in third place, while Rihanna's exotic beauty won her fourth place

'Everyone in the list has a distinct look, whether it's natural beauty, full octane glamour or a love of beauty trend-hopping.

'While the majority of ladies in the list are natural beauties, we also see the TOWIE effect with Amy Childs appearing on the list for the first time with her Essex tan, hair extensions, and false nails.'

The study also found Cheryl managed to nudge her replacement on the UK X Factor, judge Tulisa Contostavlos, down into sixth place.

Pop princess Rihanna and This Morning television presenter Holly Willoughby completed the top five beauty icons of 2011.

Seventh in the list is mother-to-be Beyonce who appears on the list for the first time, while Harry Potter's Emma Watson appears at number eight on the list.

With her pixie haircut, the young actress is the only woman in the top ten with short hair.

American singer and Mrs Russell Brand Katy Perry takes the number nine spot, cited for her quirky style, while mother-of-four and fashion icon Victoria Beckham completes the top ten.

New entries for 2011 include singers Lady Gaga at 12, Katherine Jenkins at 14 and Vogue cover girl Adele at 16.

Some who appeared in last year's list failed to appear this year, with Kylie Minogue, Fearne Cotton, Leona Lewis, Michelle Obama and Gemma Arterton all falling out of the top 20.

Sara Wolverson added: 'As always our Beauty Icons survey gives a snapshot of the changing face of British beauty.

'A key change for us is the continued rise of the brunette with three quarters of the top 20 sporting brown hair.

'We can see directly how changing celebrity trends affect our sales, from the 'Duchess effect' on sales of black eyeliner, to the 'Gaga effect' causing crazy nail art and our brightest cosmetics being a huge hit all year long, and Rihanna and Cheryl Cole's flirtation with vibrant red hair causing sales to rocket.'

1. Michelle Obama, in Alexander McQueen at a state dinner for China in Washington

This red silk organza dress was scandalous when Michelle Obama wore it in January because her choice of a British designer was deemed unpatriotic: Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen. The First Lady defended her choice thus: ‘Look, women, wear what you love. That’s all I can say. That’s my motto. I wear what I like.’

2. Kate Winslet, in Stella McCartney at the Venice Film Festival

Kate wore this optical illusion Octavia dress at the Venice Film Festival in September. Designer Stella McCartney bagged a well-deserved Red Carpet Designer of the Year gong at this year’s British Fashion Awards.

3. Natalie Portman, in Rodarte at the Oscars

A simple purple dress that spoke volumes. Portman had been planning to wear Dior, having been hired as the brand’s face, but changed her mind after designer John Galliano was filmed making anti-Semitic remarks in a Paris bar. Instead, she hastily chose a gown by Rodarte, the label which made the costumes for her film, Black Swan.

4. Pippa Middleton, in Alexander McQueen at the Royal Wedding

Pippa’s derriere, also clad in ivory McQueen, caused an online furore, and to my mind, slightly overshadowed the less violently tanned Kate. Which is why bridesmaids mostly wear lime nylon puffballs.

5. Lady Gaga, in Hussein Chalayan at the Grammys

Lady Gaga bagged the most magazine covers this year: 36. Her best dress? Well, not a dress exactly but the Hussein Chalayan egg she wore to the Grammys in February, from which she emerged clad in lemon-coloured latex, complete with pleather brassiere.

6. Kate Middleton, in Alexander McQueen at her wedding

What more can I say about this dress? Millions of us have seen it on display at Buckingham Palace since the wedding. It was pretty much perfect . . . and you know I never say that.

7. Kate again, in Jenny Packham at a charity event in Kensington

I love the colour, which matches the blush on her cheeks. I love her sexy, tumbling hair, and my, what a tiny waist. I have a feeling Kate’s really going to find her fashion feet in 2012.

8. Gisele, in vintage Alexander McQueen at the Met Ball, New York

This is the world’s highest-paid supermodel doing what she does best — filling out a dress. And what a gown — a 2005 McQueen fire engine red number.

9. Jennifer Lopez, on stage at the American Music Awards

This is not so much a dress, more a body stocking, with spangles covering Jennifer Lopez’s bits and bobs. I imagine she was trying to let ex-husband Marc Anthony know just what he was missing. It’s the ultimate revenge outfit, yet some magazines still asked if it was ‘age appropriate’. She is JENNIFER LOPEZ. Who cares how old she is?

10. Emma Watson, in Valentino at the Baftas

This was the year Emma Watson came of age. This nude Valentino gown was ethereal, not too lamb dressed as mutton, and not a vertiginous platform in sight.

11. Daphne Guinness, in Alexander McQueen at an exhibition in New York

It was a bit of a McQueen year all round. Daphne Guinness wore this exquisite dress from Sarah Burton’s first solo collection for the label, made entirely of lilac feathers.

Party Pippa and the £400,000 book deal: The never-seen-before images of Miss Middleton before the wedding hurricane hit

By Rebecca English, Royal Correspondent

There's no doubt that Pippa Middleton likes a party – after all, she helped to organise the Royal Wedding reception.

And now the Duchess of Cambridge’s little sister is capitalising on her hostess skills – and her new-found celebrity – with a £400,000 book deal.

The 28-year-old is said to have accepted the offer from publisher Michael Joseph, a division of Penguin, to write a book about being the perfect party hostess.

Miss Middleton already writes an online magazine for her parents’ Party Pieces firm, and posed for these photographs to promote it two years ago.

Since then her role as bridesmaid at her sister’s wedding has catapulted her to fame, and she was reportedly the subject of a fierce bidding war between some of the country’s leading publishing houses.

Inevitably, the deal is likely to attract criticism that she is cashing in on her royal connections – particularly as she is set to make thousands more from lucrative spin-offs after the book is published next Christmas.

St James’s Palace yesterday declined to comment.

Pippa Middleton gets her skates on for a twirl around the ice

Careful you don't fall on that famous derrière! Pippa Middleton gets her skates on for a twirl around the ice

There's been a lot of attention on her derrière since the Royal Wedding in April.

So tonight, Pippa Middleton had to make sure she didn't fall on it as she took to the ice at Somerset House.

Joined by some girl friends, the newly-single socialite, 27, showed off her ice-skating skills at the launch of Tiffany & Co. Presents Skate at Somerset House.

The party planner looked like she had embraced the wintry theme in a chic white coat, which she teamed with a pair of black jeans and leather gloves.

Perhaps demonstrating she was no stranger to ice-skating, Miss Middleton managed to glide around quite gracefully without falling over.

After enjoying a twirl on the ice, Pippa and the rest of the attendees watched singer Emeli Sande light up the Christmas tree before performing an acoustic set.

Also in attendance was Dame Judi Dench, interior designer Kelly Hoppen, designer Julien MacDonald, swimwear designer Melissa Odabash and Tali Lennox.

Pippa has been keeping a low-profile since her recent split from Alex Loudon, 31, after 18 months together.

She pulled out of the Square Mile Masked Ball this month after reportedly been advised by her older sister.

It was claimed former cricketer Loudon was uncomfortable with Pippa's newfound celebrity since her sister Duchess Catherine's wedding to Prince William in April.

A friend said: 'The plain truth is Alex adored Pippa but he couldn’t stand the circus that now surrounds her. Nothing is straightforward anymore.'

The younger Middleton sister's appearance at Somerset House comes as a version of her Alexander McQueen bridesmaid gown went on sale.

The Sarah Burton-designed dress, which launched Pippa onto the international stage as 'her royal hotness', is for sale at £1,995.

Hands off Harry! Cheeky Prince gets to grips with bridesmaid Pippa in never-seen-before wedding snaps

Her shapely behind is one of the most memorable images from the Royal Wedding in April.

And in these previously unseen pictures of the party of the year, it looks as though Pippa Middleton's derrière gained another high profile fan during the festivities.

Prince Harry is pictured having a cheeky grope of the bridesmaid's bottom as the oblivious Royal couple stand next to them at the wedding reception.

Of course, the flirtatious pair seen here aren't actually Prince Harry and Pippa Middleton, but a spoof by renowned sartorial photographer Alison Jackson.

In another of Jackson's humorous shots, 'Pippa' is seen sneaking out of a bedroom the morning after, as 'Prince Harry' offers her his uniform jacket to cover up her modesty.

As imagined by Jackson, the pair spent the previous evening flirting, feeding each other wedding cake and dancing energetically on the dance floor.

A possible romance between the bride and groom's siblings was the source of much speculation following the nuptials in April, after television audiences' excitement was piqued by Prince Harry and Miss Middleton's easy camaraderie as they walked down the aisle together, and later joked around on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

In these latest pictures, shot by Jackson especially for the release on Blu-ray Triple Play and DVD of hit comedy Bridesmaids, viewers could be forgiven for thinking the pair are the real deal.

'Pippa' is in fact 32-year-old Sarah Carrington, who began modelling as a Pippa-lookalike for Jackson last month.

Speaking to the Mail on Sunday's Katie Nicholl at the time, Jackson said: ‘I’ve been looking for the perfect Pippa ever since she burst on to the scene.

‘She has been one of the hardest people for me to cast. But when I saw Sarah, I knew she was ideal and she has proved to be very successful in front of the camera even though this is all new to her.

'In certain angles she is Pippa’s absolute double. The hair and make-up are just perfect and she has Pippa’s shy smile down to a tee.’

Miss Carrington, a speech therapist, told the Mail: ‘My friends were all telling me that I looked like Pippa and lots of people texted me during the Royal Wedding to say they thought there was a startling resemblance but I could never see it.’

'During the summer I was shopping at Waitrose with my boyfriend and the woman at the checkout thought I was Pippa. That’s when my boyfriend decided to send a picture to the lookalike agency.

‘The first job I did was for Alison and it was great fun, if a little nerve-racking. It’s very different from my day job.

'I have told a few people at work what I was doing and they are all very pleased for me. The truth is I didn’t really pay much attention to Pippa or the Royals until now.

‘I knew who she was because I’d read about her in Tatler, but I never imagined being paid to look like her. It’s all a bit surreal.’

Pippa Middleton and boyfriend Alex Loudon 'split after blazing rows'

By Lucy Buckland

Last updated at 3:14 PM on 11th November 2011

Pippa Middleton is said to have split from her long term boyfriend ex-cricketer Alex Loudon.

Friends said the 27-year-old Royal bridesmaid and her 31-year-old beau finally called time on their three-year relationship after a string of arguments.

A source told The Sun that Pippa, whose profile sky-rocketed after the Royal Wedding, had sought refuge with her sister after the split.

The unnamed friend told the paper: 'Pippa tried to get over the split by spending last weekend with Wills and Kate at Balmoral.

'She and Alex split briefly in the summer — but this time it's over. They are barely speaking.'

During the couple's brief separation Pippa was spotted in the company of her former boyfriend and close friend, George Percy in Madrid, before reconciling with Loudon.

But friends said this time their separation is for good after a series of rows, one which erupted at an acquaintance's wedding.

It is believed Loudon, a city banker, had found it difficult to deal with Pippa's sudden fame as a sex symbol.

While other friends revealed their relationship started crumbling after the Royal Wedding in April.

A source told the tabloid: 'It was said after the wedding that Alex was jealous of Pippa flirting with Prince Harry. But the truth is she and Harry are just mates.'
In the weeks after her sister got married Pippa's derrière became so popular it was even given its own Facebook page and social networking site Twitter went crazy with people calling the party planner 'Her Royal Hotness', a nickname first used in Royal Wedding reports filed by the Daily Mail's Catherine Ostler.

Although the pair's relationship had been known to friends as volatile in recent months it hadn't always been the case with rumours the former England cricketer was apparently preparing to pop the question surfacing just weeks ago.

The 31-year-old had apparently asked one of his friends to look for engagement rings for him, out in the Cotswolds.

And Loudon had reportedly put a lot of thought into how to keep the proposal quiet, although it turns out it any careful preparations may be in vain.

The MailOnline contacted Pippa Middleton for a comment but she was unavailable.

Pippa Middleton on throwing the perfect party, a tongue-in-cheek guide

How to party like Pippa! As it's claimed she's writing a book on throwing the perfect party, a tongue-in-cheek guide

By David Thomas

Last updated at 8:34 AM on 1st November 2011

Pippa Middleton is in talks with publishers about writing a book on party etiquette and it seems that she's got all the necessary qualifications.

Not only does she help run her parents' party supply website - Party Pieces - but she's also been snapped being the life and soul of various bubbly shindigs.

She's dressed as a chav, wrapped herself in loo roll and even climbed to the top of a human pyramid - all for merry larks.

If you follow in her footsteps, fun is guaranteed.

How to do fancy dress: Avoid uniforms, did you see how much trouble they got Prince Harry into?
How to do fancy dress: Avoid uniforms, did you see how much trouble they got Prince Harry into?

I adore fancy-dress parties, but it's such hard work trying to think of a theme. I used to think it was a safe bet to go for uniforms, but since Harry got into all that trouble for wearing a swastika armband, that's a no-no. So now I'm all about WAGs.

It's totally hilair getting dressed up in Burberry and Adidas and cheap bling and then talking all 'ghetto' (hint: just end every sentence with 'innit'!).

How to do be really popular: Be a very good sport - it's hysterical
How to do be really popular: Be a very good sport - it's hysterical
How to do be really popular: Be a very good sport - it's hysterical

If a girl wants to be popular, she has to be a really good sport. Here I am showing my fun side by wearing a dress that is made of actual, real loo paper!

All the naughty boys pour wine on it to see if it goes soggy, or try to tear sheets off the bottom — it's literally hysterical! One word of advice: don't use up all the actual loo paper in the house, or things could get a bit stressy later.

But don't worry — you can buy a genuine Pippa-Style Andrex Party Frock from Party Pieces (our family website) for just £179.99

Smart girls know how to cope with social emergencies. Here I am wearing my fave Alice Temperley red dress, and it's all totally wicked, but then — OH. MY. GOD!
First someone starts taking snaps when I'm having a totally 110 per cent innocent boogie with my ex, 'Sharky' Astor. And then I have a major wardrobe malfunction, just like Chelsee Healey did on Strictly.
Chelsee started crying, silly girl. What you have to do is put your arm across the danger zone and then keep smiling. Works every time — and Sharky absolutely loved it!
How to host a dinner party: After-dinner games are essensh!

How to entertain on a student budget: Get your 'make-up' from Rymans
How to entertain on a student budget: Get your 'make-up' from Rymans
When it comes to proper, upper-class entertaining, after-dinner games are essensh! Sardines, Murder In The Dark and Hide The Sausage are just three super-fun things to play.
But nothing beats a really good human pyramid. All the boys show how strong they are by holding it up, and then all us girls can have a good squeal when we try to climb to the top.
It's crucial to be the girl on top — like me — because then you know that you're the thinnest.
..........................................................................

If you're entertaining on a student budget, every penny counts. So when I was at Edinburgh — in Scotland, where they take saving money very seriously — I scrimped on my party make-up by ignoring expensive cosmetics counters and getting it all from Ryman, the stationery shop.
A few stick-on shiny stars really brighten up any girl's face, and they hide any embarrassing spots, too!

How to come with photographers: Look composed and demure at all times... unlike the girls in the background here
How to come with photographers: Look composed and demure at all times... unlike the girls in the background here
If you’re the sort of girl who gets photographed everywhere, then you must stay composed at all times.
Just look at the girls behind me. One of them’s got her mouth wide open and the other is flashing her armpit. Big mistake! One missed shave and it’s a Julia Roberts-style disaster!
I, on the other hand, look happy, yet demure. And I complete the look by having multi-millionaire Carphone Warehouse founder David Ross next to me. Perfect!

How to behave at social engagements: Always have the biggest wine glass and don't be afraid to take risks with your appearance
How to behave at social engagements: Always have the biggest wine glass and don't be afraid to take risks with your appearance
How to behave at social engagements: Always have the biggest wine glass and don't be afraid to take risks with your appearance

Mummy is my heroine. Her No.1 rule for social events is: Always make sure you have the biggest wine glass!

I don't know how she does it. I mean, here we are together at a super bash and I'd swear all the glasses were identical, but hers looks twice the size! I love this picture because for once you can't see Mummy's perfect pins. I know she has the best legs in the family, but really, does she have to remind everyone all the time?

Never be afraid to take risks with your appearance. Here I am, for example, going to a rollerdisco.

Now, I could have played it straight: just that adorable little dress and simple black courts and people would have thought: 'Good Lord! What a stunning girl, with a perfect figure and tumbling hair to die for!' But because I've added some girly pink legwarmers and shades they know I'm not only gorgeous, I'm also fun, fun, fun!

All made-up: Pippa Middleton goes heavy on the eyes and lips as she attends celebrity charity event

When it comes to make-up, they say you should highlight your best feature and leave the rest relatively simple.

But it seems Pippa Middleton just couldn't decide which part of her face to emphasise when she attended a charity event last night.

The Duchess of Cambridge's sister went heavy on the eyes with kohl-rimmed lids - and matched them with a strong pink shade of lipstick and blusher.

Listening intently: Pippa appeared at ease as she mingled with revellers while sipping on a glass of wine at the bash

Pippa opted for heavy eye make-up, statement pink lipstick and blusher as she attended the Too Many Women dinner

But after attracting attention with a low-cut red dress on her last outing, Pippa opted to play it safe with a long-sleeved high-neck outfit as she supported the Two Many Women campaign.

She coupled the look with statement dress, by Dannii Minogue and Tabitha Somerset-Webb's Project D label.

But Pippa showed less flesh than Fergie in the floral outfit but still managed too look stylish with her hair pulled back.

And the Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson refused to dress her age in a black gown, showing off her shoulders.

Pippa was joined by her friend Katie Readman at the event, hosted by retailer All Saints at the Petersham Nurseries in Richmond.

The blonde wore a red dress, reminiscent of Pippa's two weeks ago.

Another lady in red last night was actress Sienna Miller, who donned a short dress with feathers attached.

Pippa was spotted at the beginning of the month at a charity boxing ball in a dress similar to Geri Halliwell and Prince William former girlfriend Jecca Craig.
However, the clash did not stop Pippa and Geri – who sat at neighbouring tables – chatting to each other. They appeared to be ‘getting on like a house on fire’, according to one observer.
Money raised at the event went to the Starlight Children’s Foundation, which grants wishes for seriously ill youngsters, and the Lt Dougie Dalzell MC Memorial Trust, which was set up in memory of a British soldier killed in Afghanistan.
