Our style guru's gongs for the most iconic outfits of 2011

1. Michelle Obama, in Alexander McQueen at a state dinner for China in Washington

This red silk organza dress was scandalous when Michelle Obama wore it in January because her choice of a British designer was deemed unpatriotic: Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen. The First Lady defended her choice thus: ‘Look, women, wear what you love. That’s all I can say. That’s my motto. I wear what I like.’

2. Kate Winslet, in Stella McCartney at the Venice Film Festival

Kate wore this optical illusion Octavia dress at the Venice Film Festival in September. Designer Stella McCartney bagged a well-deserved Red Carpet Designer of the Year gong at this year’s British Fashion Awards.

3. Natalie Portman, in Rodarte at the Oscars

A simple purple dress that spoke volumes. Portman had been planning to wear Dior, having been hired as the brand’s face, but changed her mind after designer John Galliano was filmed making anti-Semitic remarks in a Paris bar. Instead, she hastily chose a gown by Rodarte, the label which made the costumes for her film, Black Swan.

4. Pippa Middleton, in Alexander McQueen at the Royal Wedding

Pippa’s derriere, also clad in ivory McQueen, caused an online furore, and to my mind, slightly overshadowed the less violently tanned Kate. Which is why bridesmaids mostly wear lime nylon puffballs.

5. Lady Gaga, in Hussein Chalayan at the Grammys

Lady Gaga bagged the most magazine covers this year: 36. Her best dress? Well, not a dress exactly but the Hussein Chalayan egg she wore to the Grammys in February, from which she emerged clad in lemon-coloured latex, complete with pleather brassiere.

6. Kate Middleton, in Alexander McQueen at her wedding

What more can I say about this dress? Millions of us have seen it on display at Buckingham Palace since the wedding. It was pretty much perfect . . . and you know I never say that.

7. Kate again, in Jenny Packham at a charity event in Kensington

I love the colour, which matches the blush on her cheeks. I love her sexy, tumbling hair, and my, what a tiny waist. I have a feeling Kate’s really going to find her fashion feet in 2012.

8. Gisele, in vintage Alexander McQueen at the Met Ball, New York

This is the world’s highest-paid supermodel doing what she does best — filling out a dress. And what a gown — a 2005 McQueen fire engine red number.

9. Jennifer Lopez, on stage at the American Music Awards

This is not so much a dress, more a body stocking, with spangles covering Jennifer Lopez’s bits and bobs. I imagine she was trying to let ex-husband Marc Anthony know just what he was missing. It’s the ultimate revenge outfit, yet some magazines still asked if it was ‘age appropriate’. She is JENNIFER LOPEZ. Who cares how old she is?

10. Emma Watson, in Valentino at the Baftas

This was the year Emma Watson came of age. This nude Valentino gown was ethereal, not too lamb dressed as mutton, and not a vertiginous platform in sight.

11. Daphne Guinness, in Alexander McQueen at an exhibition in New York

It was a bit of a McQueen year all round. Daphne Guinness wore this exquisite dress from Sarah Burton’s first solo collection for the label, made entirely of lilac feathers.

Golden Globe 2012 nominations: Kate Winslet leads ladies with two nods, as Brad Pitt and George Clooney fight for Best Actor

It's the prestigious prize for the mantlepiece every starlet dreams of, with Golden Globe recognition paving the way for Oscar glory.

And all eyes will be on Kate Winslet after she scooped a nomination for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for Carnage and Best Actress in a Motion Picture or Miniseries for Mildred Pierce.

This will be the eighth time the Titanic beauty, 36, has been nominated, and potentially her third win after she triumphed in 2008 for The Reader and Revolutionary Road.

But Winslet has stiff competition on her hands, battling the likes of Carnage co-star Jodie Foster, Charlize Theron (Young Adult), Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids) and Michelle Williams (My Week With Marilyn) for the Musical/Comedy prize.

She will also battle Diane Lane of Cinema Verite, Downton Abbey's Elizabeth McGovern and Emily Watson from Appropriate Adult for the Motion Picture/Miniseries title.

Fellow women of the showbiz elite who join Winslet on the list, include Meryl Streep for The Iron Lady and Rooney Mara of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo who are up for Best Actress in a Drama.
Streep and Mara will strive to triumph alongside Glenn Close of Albert Nobbs, Viola Davis from The Help and the fantastic Tilda Swinton for We Need to Talk About Kevin.

Flying the flag for the boys is George Clooney, whose two films The Descendants and The Ides Of March, made it onto the Best Motion Picture list.

They face competition from The Help, Hugo, Moneyball and Steven Spielberg production War Horse.

The coveted prize of Best Director will land in the lap of one of the lucky five; Woody Allen for Midnight in Paris, George Clooney for The Ides of March, Michel Hazanavicius for The Artist, Alexander Payne for The Descendants or Martin Scorsese for Hugo.

The nominations were announced today by Hollywood veteran Woody Harrelson, Modern Family star Sofia Vergara, Scottish hunk Gerard Butler and Rashida Jones at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, California.

Unlikely film The Artist topped the leaderboard, with the French film scooping six nominations.

Yet hot on its tale and tied in second place is sixties tale The Help and Clooney's Hawaiian family story The Descendants; with both films earning five nods including Best Motion Picture Drama.

While Clooney was also nominated for Best Actor in a Drama, The Help earned acting nods for Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain.

Best Actress in a Television Drama Series included nominations for Claire Danes (Homeland), Mireille Enos (The Killing), Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife) and Madeleine Stowe (Revenge).

Following their lead was the category for Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Miniseries or TV movie.

Boardwalk Empire star Kelly Macdonald will battle Jessica Lange from American Horror Story, Maggie Smith of Downton Abbey, Sofia Vergara of Modern Family and Evan Rachel Wood for Mildred Pierce.

Best Actor for a Television Comedy Series category sees Alec Baldwin of 30 Rock take on David Duchovny of Californication, Johnny Galecki of The Big Bang Theory and Matt LeBlanc of Episodes.

There doesn't seem to be a clear runner for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical Film, with Jean Dujardin (The Artist), Brendan Gleeson (The Guard), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (50/50), Ryan Gosling (Crazy, Stupid, Love) and Owen Wilson (Midnight in Paris) all in the running.

The Flowers of War, In the Land of Blood of Honey, The Kid With a Bike, A Separation and The Skin I Live In will all compete for Best Foreign Film.

Ricky Gervais will return as the host, despite offending the entirety of the auditorium earlier this year.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced through Twitter last month that the British comedian will reprise his role as presenter for the third time at the ceremony in January 2012.

A previous quip drew gasps when he referred to one film featuring ‘two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay, so the complete opposite of some famous Scientologists then’.

He then added: 'My lawyers helped me with the wording of that joke.'

Today he revealed he will be eating something light prior to popping on his tuxedo on the night, saying: 'I'll just have something light like beans on toast so I don't throw up all over Robert De Niro.'

The 69th annual Golden Globes ceremony will take place on January 15.

Five-time Academy Award and Globe nominee Morgan Freeman, who won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Million Dollar Baby and a Best Actor Globe for Driving Miss Daisy, will receive the group's Cecil B. DeMille Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Last year, The King's Speech ruled over Hollywood with an impressive seven nominations.

Strictly host Tess Daly is the latest star to go dotty for Stella McCartney's sheer dress

By Emily Sheridan

Last updated at 10:07 PM on 23rd October 2011

Strictly Come Dancing fans are used to seeing host Tess Daly in simple, classic couture gowns.

But in recent weeks, the TV presenter has been stepping up the style with a series of high-fashion ensembles.

And tonight, she became the latest celebrity to fall for Stella McCartney's hugely successful collection of polka dot dresses.

After wearing a colourful Emilio Pucci number on Saturday night's show, the 41-year-old stepped up her style game in the risque McCartney creation.

The sheer panels on the side of the risqué dress gave a clear view of the mother-of-two's toned figure.

Daly's dress is the same one worn by American singer Anastasia and Dutch supermodel Doutzen Kroes in recent months.

However, unlike daring Daly, both Anastasia and Kroes wore a nude slip underneath.

Former Victoria's Secret model Kroes wore the ensemble to a Missoni party in September, while One Day In Your Life singer Anastasia wore it to the Pink Ribbon charity ball two weeks ago.

And it is similar to McCartney's 'Lucia' dress worn by Kate Winslet, Livia Firth and Susan Sarandon earlier this year.

American star Liv Tyler has also worn another version of a polka dot dress with a corset panelling and peplum detailing when she attended a McCartney party in New York in May.

Winslet was the first celebrity to be seen wearing one of the polka-dot dresses when she wore the £1,285 Lucia to the New York premiere of Mildred Pierce in March.

Colin Firth's wife Livia wore the same dress at the Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy premiere in London last month.

And then Sarandon also opted for the Lucia at the Somaly Mam Foundation Benefit Gala in New York last Thursday.

Kate Winslet opens up on her divorce from Sam Mendes in new photoshoot - Harper's Bazaar Nov Issue

'It's fine... we're grown-ups at the end of the day': Kate Winslet opens up on her divorce from Sam Mendes in new photoshoot

By Ben Todd

Last updated at 12:16 AM on 4th October 2011

After more than a year of silence on the subject, Kate Winslet has spoken of her torment following her break-up from director Sam Mendes.

The actress, who is 36 tomorrow, said divorce proceedings began while she was filming her Emmy award-winning role as Mildred Pierce – who also parts from her husband.

And she admitted that, at one point, her personal anguish mirrored the plot so much she did not have to act.

'There's a scene where Mildred and Bert are divorced and they sit down together, because they've got to settle on a cause,' she said.

'The first stage of my divorce with Sam came through on the very day that we were shooting. So that scene is nothing to do with acting.'

Mother-of-two Miss Winslet – now dating Sir Richard Branson's nephew Ned Rocknroll – has recently appeared in a succession of revealing outfits. She split up with Mendes in March 2010.

'One thing I will say about me and Sam is that it's fine, it's really fine,' she said. 'We're grown-ups at the end of the day, and however hard it's been for me, it's been equally hard for him.'

In an expletive-laden interview with Harper's Bazaar magazine, she said her initial reaction following the break-up was to bottle up her feelings – before a close friend encouraged her to show her emotions.

'As a woman, especially when you have children, one gets so good at soldiering on – almost too good. Because you know what it's like – as soon as you open that can of worms, it's so f***ing big, you wish you'd never taken the goddamn lid off.

'I've had to remind myself to have those moments of being able to have a f***ing good cry, but it did take someone putting their hand on me – a gay male friend, actually, who put his hand on my shoulder and said: "It's OK, you can cry about this, and maybe you should."'

Miss Winslet has a daughter, Mia, who turns 12 next week, with first husband Jim Threapleton and a seven-year-old son, Joe, with Mendes.

'There's no way that I'm going to allow my children to be f***ed up because my marriages haven't worked out,' she said.

'I so wish that that wasn't the case, that that hadn't happened in my life, but it has. So I will make the best of it.'

Miss Winslet and 33-year-old Mr Rocknroll, born Ned Abel Smith, are said to have got together in August following the house fire on Branson's private Caribbean island of Necker, where they were both guests.

According to one friend, Miss Winslet is 'madly in love' with Mr Rocknroll – who separated from his wife Eliza, 23, this year – and apparently believes he is 'The One'.

One source reportedly said: 'They have really fallen for each other. They are even mentioning marriage.'

Berkshire-born Miss Winslet has relocated from New York to England and enrolled her children in school.

She told the magazine: 'I feel that I'm just at the beginning of a new narrative, and it's incredibly exciting.'

The full interview is in the November issue of Harper's Bazaar UK magazine, on sale now.

The Kate escape: Actress tells of relief after fleeing Branson's inferno

Relief: The actress believes the blaze could have easily resulted in fatalities

Kate Winslet has spoken for the first time about her dramatic escape from the fire that gutted Sir Richard Branson’s Caribbean home.

The Oscar-winning actress, who was praised by the Virgin tycoon for carrying his 90-year-old mother out of the flames as well as rescuing her own children, said it was an experience she ‘would never forget’.

She was staying at the Great House on Necker, Sir Richard’s private domain in the British Virgin Islands, with her daughter Mia, ten, seven-year-old son Joe, and boyfriend Louis Dowler, a model.

They were among a party of 20 VIP guests who were forced to flee for their lives when lightning struck the multi-million-pound mansion in the early hours of Monday during a tropical hurricane. Miss Winslet said: ‘I’m just so glad that everyone is safe. And this very easily could not have been the case.

‘I will never forget Richard placing his arms around both my children as we were watching the flames, and saying, “At the end of the day, what you realise is that all that matters is the people that you love. Everything else is just stuff. And none of that stuff matters”.’

Sir Richard’s mother Eve, daughter Holly, 29, and other family members were in the Great House at the time.

The 61-year-old tycoon, who had been staying in a separate villa with his wife Joan and son Sam, 25, told yesterday how he leapt naked from bed at 4am and raced towards the flames – only to run into a cactus bush.

Sam, who was with him, said: ‘The sight of our home was horrific. Amid the storm all I could see was a huge ball of flame and a giant orange glow reflecting off the rain.

‘I thought everyone inside was being burnt alive. I couldn’t believe my eyes.

‘I ran barefoot over cacti, through the hurricane force winds, all I could think was I’ve got to try and save what was left of my family, and did my best not to break down. Soon after arriving I was told all were alive and safe but the feeling of shock remained.’

Holly, who is due to marry on the island in December, said: ‘I was awoken by shouting which was hard to hear over the howling hurricane winds and rain, but I knew instantly something was wrong. I looked down the corridor to see a raging fire in the main room.

‘The flames were quickly spreading to where everyone was sleeping and we knew instantly the urgency to get everyone to safety.

‘I ran as fast as I could, bare feet in the winds and rain, to get to my mum and dad to let them know we were OK. I hated the thought of them worrying.

‘I ran into Sam coming towards the house, crying. For mum, dad and Sam it was a terrible experience to go through. They had awoken in a different house and saw the flames thinking we were all burning inside.’

Holly said that once everyone was safe, ‘we then sat and watched flames sweep through our beautiful family home feeling completely helpless’.

Sir Richard said that he is determined to rebuild the house as soon as possible.

And he revealed that the family were pleased to discover that their pet redfoot tortoise, feared dead in the blaze, had actually survived.

‘To our absolute delight walking across the ashes was ET, named after Roald Dahl’s famous Esio Trot from when Roald visited Necker,’ he said.

‘None of us could understand how anything could have survived that inferno and ET will have pride of place in the new Great House once it is built.’

'I don't have a model's body': Kate Winslet shows off her 'real shape' for new St. John campaign

Kate Winslet may not be a size zero, but that won't stop her from forging a successful modelling career.

The actress showed off her curves as the new face of U.S knitwear label St. John for their 2011 autumn campaign.

In behind the scenes footage, a smouldering Kate is shot in a series of elegant poses on stage at a theatre in New Jersey.

In video footage, entitled 'scenes of a woman', Kate declares her love for the U.S label for creating clothes that suit her 'real shape'.

Kate says: 'With St. John You can look extremely chic without trying too hard.

'You don't feel as though they are clothes that only a model would be able to wear.

'And obviously I am not a model, I don't have a model's body, I have a real shape.

'And that just means a lot to me to be able to wear clothes that do embody that message of strength and power and femininity in a real shape.'

The Titanic actress was hired to replace redhead model Karen Elson.

Angelina Jolie was previously the face of the label but it was reported she 'overshadowed' the brand.

When hiring Elson, CEO Glenn McMahon told WWD: 'We wanted to make a clean break from actresses and steer away from blondes and cleanse the palette.'

But it looks as though McMahon is now eating his words after hiring the 'blonde' actress.

Retouching: The actress loves St. John for creating clothes for 'real women'

Creative director George Sharp said: 'She is an accomplished, beautiful woman with an extraordinary body of work, and one of the most admired actors of her generation.

'She embodies the modern sensibility of St John, she is contemporary and authentically captures the style of the St. John woman.'

Meanwhile, Kate hopes to set an example for her ten-year-old daughter, Mia, by showing her that she 'can have it all.'

She says: 'I'm very much inspired by mothers, women who can pull it all together, do it all.
