It's the prestigious prize for the mantlepiece every starlet dreams of, with Golden Globe recognition paving the way for Oscar glory.

And all eyes will be on Kate Winslet after she scooped a nomination for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for Carnage and Best Actress in a Motion Picture or Miniseries for Mildred Pierce.

This will be the eighth time the Titanic beauty, 36, has been nominated, and potentially her third win after she triumphed in 2008 for The Reader and Revolutionary Road.

But Winslet has stiff competition on her hands, battling the likes of Carnage co-star Jodie Foster, Charlize Theron (Young Adult), Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids) and Michelle Williams (My Week With Marilyn) for the Musical/Comedy prize.

She will also battle Diane Lane of Cinema Verite, Downton Abbey's Elizabeth McGovern and Emily Watson from Appropriate Adult for the Motion Picture/Miniseries title.

Fellow women of the showbiz elite who join Winslet on the list, include Meryl Streep for The Iron Lady and Rooney Mara of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo who are up for Best Actress in a Drama.
Streep and Mara will strive to triumph alongside Glenn Close of Albert Nobbs, Viola Davis from The Help and the fantastic Tilda Swinton for We Need to Talk About Kevin.

Flying the flag for the boys is George Clooney, whose two films The Descendants and The Ides Of March, made it onto the Best Motion Picture list.

They face competition from The Help, Hugo, Moneyball and Steven Spielberg production War Horse.

The coveted prize of Best Director will land in the lap of one of the lucky five; Woody Allen for Midnight in Paris, George Clooney for The Ides of March, Michel Hazanavicius for The Artist, Alexander Payne for The Descendants or Martin Scorsese for Hugo.

The nominations were announced today by Hollywood veteran Woody Harrelson, Modern Family star Sofia Vergara, Scottish hunk Gerard Butler and Rashida Jones at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, California.

Unlikely film The Artist topped the leaderboard, with the French film scooping six nominations.

Yet hot on its tale and tied in second place is sixties tale The Help and Clooney's Hawaiian family story The Descendants; with both films earning five nods including Best Motion Picture Drama.

Following their lead was the category for Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Miniseries or TV movie.

Boardwalk Empire star Kelly Macdonald will battle Jessica Lange from American Horror Story, Maggie Smith of Downton Abbey, Sofia Vergara of Modern Family and Evan Rachel Wood for Mildred Pierce.

Best Actor for a Television Comedy Series category sees Alec Baldwin of 30 Rock take on David Duchovny of Californication, Johnny Galecki of The Big Bang Theory and Matt LeBlanc of Episodes.

There doesn't seem to be a clear runner for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical Film, with Jean Dujardin (The Artist), Brendan Gleeson (The Guard), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (50/50), Ryan Gosling (Crazy, Stupid, Love) and Owen Wilson (Midnight in Paris) all in the running.

The Flowers of War, In the Land of Blood of Honey, The Kid With a Bike, A Separation and The Skin I Live In will all compete for Best Foreign Film.

Ricky Gervais will return as the host, despite offending the entirety of the auditorium earlier this year.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced through Twitter last month that the British comedian will reprise his role as presenter for the third time at the ceremony in January 2012.

A previous quip drew gasps when he referred to one film featuring ‘two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay, so the complete opposite of some famous Scientologists then’.

He then added: 'My lawyers helped me with the wording of that joke.'

The 50-year-old also said that Sex And The City 2 should have won the special effects award for ‘the team that airbrushed that poster... 'Girls, we know how old you are.'

Today he revealed he will be eating something light prior to popping on his tuxedo on the night, saying: 'I'll just have something light like beans on toast so I don't throw up all over Robert De Niro.'

Five-time Academy Award and Globe nominee Morgan Freeman, who won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Million Dollar Baby and a Best Actor Globe for Driving Miss Daisy, will receive the group's Cecil B. DeMille Award for Lifetime Achievement.

It is her big screen debut tonight, so Katy Perry would have wanted to ensure nobody stole the spotlight.

The quirky signer arrived at the premiere of The Smurfs movie in New York wearing a cute white dress emblazoned with a picture of her character, Smurfette, in sparkling sequins on the front.

Her newly blonde locks also made their red carpet debut at the event, where Katy was joined by he co-stars, both human and Smurf.

The 26-year-old E.T. singer showed off plenty of her porcelain skin in the tiny frock which she was with blue pumps and matching eye make-up.

Katy also accessorised with a Smurf manicure - the star had the cartoon characters painted on to her nails for the event.

Perry tweeted on her way to the screening: 'Headed to SMURF VILLAGE for the premiere of The Smurfs!!! I'm SMURFETTE!!! I'm blue... aba de aba die aba de aba di aba de aba di! YAY!'

Joining Katy at the screening were the film's human stars, Sofia Vergara and Jayma Mays.

Modern Family actress Sofia was typically stunning in a long purple gown with stacked bangles and turquoise earrings.

Glee star Jayma Mays, who plays the wife of Neil Patrick Harris in the family film, rivalled Katy's tony frock in her own strapless green mini.

Neil Patrick Harris, looking dapper in a suit, brought along partner David Burtka.

In the movie, the evil wizard Gargamel, voiced by Hank Azaria, exiles the Smurfs from their village into the real world.

It's a children's event Kim! Miss Kardashian wears cleavage enhancing mini-dress to Kids' Choice Awards

It was an event for children and family viewing but that didn’t stop Kim Kardashian flaunting her sensational curves in a provocative mini-dress.

The 30-year-old sashayed along the orange carpet at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards in a frilly cream frock that boasted a plunging neckline and thigh-high hemline.

Her demure sister Kourtney, 31, managed to look ravishing yet understated in a floor-length, high-necked red gown but failed to pass on her fashion tips to her younger sibling.

The sisters later took to the stage alongside a mime, John Mackey, to present the Favourite TV Show award at the 24th annual awards show.

And the girls were also joined by their younger half-sisters Kylie and Kendall Jenner, who both wore pale pink dresses with nude heels.

Luckily the Kardashians managed to keep their dignity during the night by not being slimed.
Kim wrote on her Twitter page: ‘The awards were so fun! Thank heaven we didn’t get slimmed!!!
And later added: ‘I met@SofiaVergara tonight. She is sooo beautiful & was soooo sweet! Love u Sofia xo.’

Meanwhile, as Kim took the opportunity to make waves among male admirers, 18-year-old Miley Cyrus was looking all grown up in a conservative floral gown.
The actress and singer put her troubles behind her as she arrived for awards in a glamorous flowing dress and picked up the award for Favourite Movie Actress.
The gown, complete with train, highlighted Miley's slender figure. The Hannah Montana star has been criticised for her occasionally revealing clothing in recent months, but looked lovely on the orange carpet.
Things have picked up for the former Disney star since her highly-publicised troubles, she was recently seen smiling after her parents Trish and Billy Ray reunited.

Meanwhile Heidi Klum went for the simple and understated look in a black mini dress, embellished only with white embroidery around the neck.
The 37-year-old presenter of Seriously Funny Kids matched her tailored shift with a pair of black high heels, wearing her hair in a simple slicked back bun.
But hopefully she took a change of outfit, as she was later slimed on stage, as was Russell Brand and Johnny Depp.
Johnny looked ravishing before being slimed, in a pinstriped waistcoat, scarf and had, while Justin Timberlake played it cool in a black leather jacket.

Snoop Dogg got the worst sliming off all the stars, as he was covered head to toe in the green sludge.
Choosing white was Disney Star Selena Gomez, 18, whose boyfriend Justin Bieber was absent - away performing in Europe.
Luckily she escaped the slime and picked up the Favourite TV Actress award.
Sisters Paris and Nicki Hilton wore pink and white mini dresses, posing together as they stood on the red carpet under the late afternoon LA sun. Paris held one leg up in the style of a flamingo, while her sister posed more traditionally.
Also on the orange carpet was the Black Eyed Peas, with Fergie making it clear she was ready to embrace whatever the evening threw at her.

The glamorous front-woman said she's become strangely curious - and a little afraid - of what the infamous slime will feel, smell and taste like at the 24th annual Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Award.
She donned a custom-made outfit for a kid-friendly medley with her fellow Peas, marking the group's first time at the slimy ceremony.
And she also performed on stage with the event's host Jack Black.
'We've always been on tour every year,' said Fergie. 'My mom would call me and say, "You know you're nominated for Kids' Choice Awards."
'I would watch the show on the Internet, and it would make me sad that we couldn't be there. This is a special moment for us to be able to come to this particular award show and rock it.'

Fergie and the Peas won one of the fan-favourite ceremony's blimp-shaped trophies for the Favourite Music Group category.
They were up against musical siblings the Jonas Brothers, country crooners Lady Antebellum and boy band Big Time Rush, who are also slated to perform at the University of Southern California's Galen Center, along with Willow Smith and Train.
More than 10,000 screaming kids, as well as a few adults, were anticipated at Saturday's ceremony, which featured Justin Timberlake receiving The Big Help humanitarian award and Jack Black hosting for the third time.
The zany star of such films as Kung Fu Panda and Gulliver's Travels promised 'a huge opening number' and several costume changes.

'I'm going to break the record for amounts of costume changes in one night,' boasted Black, who was sporting a simple red T-shirt and black shorts during rehearsals Friday afternoon.
'I'm going to put Madonna and Cher to shame because I'm going to be changing in the middle of presentations. I'm going to try to have a different outfit every 38 seconds.'

Presenters - and possible slimees - included Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Josh Duhamel, Sofia Vergara, Jane Lynch and Miranda Cosgrove.
Marjorie Cohn, Nickelodeon's president of development and original programming, admitted celebs are usually given a head's up if they're due for a sliming but promised that no one can truly anticipate the green goop.
