Is this the model world's idea of a beautiful woman? Waif-like teen wins industry's most prestigious contest

By Daily Mail Reporter

Last updated at 10:40 PM on 6th December 2011

It is one of the world's most prestigious modelling competitions. So when Julia Schneider won the Elite Model Look contest in Shanghai today, she was understandably thrilled.

But, though an undeniably attractive girl, the fact that the 15-year-old, from Gävle, Sweden has an extremely slight frame raises questions about ideals of beauty in the modelling industry.

While Julia's age, genetics and passion for ice hockey are most likely the reason for her waif-like build, the concern for many is that if she were to appear in a fashion campaign, impressionable young girls might learn to consider her an example of a physical ideal - and go to dangerous extremes to attain the same look.

Already commentators have taken issue with Elite's decision to award the prize to such a thin girl.

The Montreal Gazette's Lens blog this afternoon read: 'Sweden’s Julia Schneider looks more like a "model" of anorexia than anything stylish that the fashion industry should be putting on a pedestal as a standard for emulation...

'Skeletons are meant jump out of closets not on to fashion runways. Why are only male models generally allowed to have an adult’s body shape?'

The writer goes on to point out that even by the industry's extreme standards, Julia is thin. Her peers, though slender themselves, all look 'healthier' than her.

While it is only fair to point out that as some women are naturally larger and others are naturally slim, the fashion industry's long-held favour for the very thin is a major concern for psychiatrists.

Nada Stotland, professor of psychiatry at Rush Medical College in Chicago and vice president of the American Psychiatric Association says that the prevalence of extremely slim women in the media helps convince those with eating disorders, like anorexia, that their emaciated frames are normal.

'We know seeing super-thin models can play a role in causing anorexia,' she told USA Today.

For Julia, however, winning the Elite contest promises to catapult her to modelling superstardom.

A keen horse rider and ice hockey player, she says she is passionate about modelling.

'The catwalk really gives me a shot of adrenaline and I want to do it over and over again,' she says in her biography on the Elite Model Look website.

'My favourite song is the one they played when I first walked the catwalk - Chris Brown's Beautiful People.'

'It was filth and I loved it!' Craig Revel Horwood praises Strictly star Harry Judd for his sizzling Argentine Tango that left girlfriend giving him the silent treatment

Harry Judd and Aliona Vilani set television screens on fire with their passionate Argentine Tango.

Their electric performance on Strictly Come Dancing tonight also tipped the leaderboard with an impressive 37 out of 40.

However, a certain young lady might not be too happy about this particular routine.

Earlier this week, the McFly drummer revealed girlfriend Izzy Johnston was so riled by his dirty dancing that she gave him the silent treatment.

He said: 'When she (Izzy) came to watch us practice the tango, Aliona warned her that it was raunchy.

'I was almost biting her neck and really getting into it to show off... On the ride home Izzy was really quiet. She was freaked out a bit. She said, "Just don’t talk to me now - speak to me in the morning."'

Even hard-to-please judge Craig Revel Horwood rewarded them with a nine, saying: 'It had authority, dominance, command, control. It was filth and I loved it!'
Bruno Tonioli doled out a generous 10, and couldn't resists flirting and turning Harry's cheeks red.

He said: 'You've never been stronger. You've never been more attractive.'

Alesha Dixon agreed and also gave top marks, while Len Wiseman was less easy to please.

Despite saying the routine was 'very clever' he moaned: 'The Argentine Tango is the about mood, yes the steps were good, but it was clinical and neat.'

He also shouted at Craig, saying: 'There was no passion you silly little sod' before having a slice of humble pie and apologising in order to evade any viewer complaints.

Elegant: Despite not coming top of again, Chelsee Healy scored an impressive 36 for her Foxtrot with Pasha Kovalev
Elegant: Despite not coming top of again, Chelsee Healy scored an impressive 36 for her Foxtrot with Pasha Kovalev

Chelsee Healy and parnter Pasha Kovalev matched their score of 36 from last week, but it wasn't quite enough to catapult them to the top spot and landed them in second behind Judd and Vilani.
They looked over the moon as Alesha awarded them a 10 for their Foxtrot, saying she looked 'elegant and graceful', adding 'you truly are a lady, absolutely stunning.'

Craig continued with his kinder streak, giving them a nine and revealing: 'You're starting to tick all my boxes, well done.'

Bruno showered the Waterloo Road actress with praise, adding: 'You are a gorgeous little thing, so sophisticated tonight. It really was like the soft wings of a dove. I adore you.'

Holly Valance performed incredibly with new partner Brendan Cole, after Artem Chigvintsev damaged his back with a spinal injury and had to pull out of the competition.

Dancing the Rumba, the Australian beauty looked dazzling in a pink sequined frock that no doubt helped to influence the score up to 34.

Alesha applauded the new pairing, saying: 'Considering you've had to change partners, you have done exceptionally well. I did feel the emotion, I just think there's so much more to come from you.'

Typically, Craig couldn't resist a quip at Cole, adding: 'I thought we got rid of you Brendan, but I'm pleased you're back as I'm loving this new partnership.'

Bruno, who scored the performance with a nine, got a little hot under the collar and seemed to fumble with his words as he said: 'You have so much sex within you!'

Cheeky: Despite being 60, Grant shows no signs of slowing down or giving a more modest performance

Robbie Savage and Ola Jordan proved to be one of the most popular couples still left in the competition, drawing the loudest cheer from the audience.

They made a small improvement of two points on last week, scoring a total of 31.

Alesha gushed: 'You are constantly moving in the right direction. Great job!', while Bruno told him he was 'becoming a smooth operator'.

The comedy performance of the night typically came from Russell Grant and Flavia Cacace.

They put on a camp extravaganza with their American Smooth, prancing around in gold costumes to reign in a score of 26 - two more than last week.

Len accused him of looking like 'a giant Ferrero Rocher', but said the performance made him laugh, Alesha added: 'We've just had a snapshot of your imagination, which looks like a fun place to be.'

Defying her year: Alesha Dixon was impressed with how 'sensational' Anita Dobson looks for 62-years-old

Despite their low score of 20, Bruce Forsyth revealed Audley Harrison and Natalie Lowe are still his favourite.

Their Cha Cha Cha drew the worst insult of the night, as Bruno said: 'National Rail on a Bank Holiday has better timing.'

He added: 'At this stage, you should give us more impact. I'm sorry, as I do like you a lot.'

Agile: Even though husband Brian May was in the audience, Anita did not hold back with partner Robin Windsor

Len tried to continue the theme of the joke, quipping: 'The only way you're going to Wembley Arena (where the Strictly tour will take place) is on the Jubilee line.

'Your timing was good, you had rhythm. It wasn't your best dance, but you did your best.'

Jason Donovan looked disappointed with his comments, although did score a reasonable 35 for his Viennese Waltz with Kristina Rihanoff.

There was also a pre-recorded message from former Neighbours co-star Kylie Minogue wishing him luck and saying: 'You still look as good as you did 20 years ago.'

While Alesha was complimentary, calling the performance 'dramatic', it was Craig that left Donovan down in the dumps.
Sealed with a kiss: Kylie sent Jason Donovan a good luck message, saying she thinks he still looks as good as he did 20 years ago

He said: 'This dance could be a 10, but it's not because your arms are letting you down, they're wooden. You have to have shaping otherwise it will remain a poor Ballroom.'

Alex Jones made a comeback from last week's disastrous performance that saw the netting of her dress get caught on the heel of her shoe and an impromptu collapse on the floor.

Together with partner James Jordan, they kicked off the show with their Jive and managed a reasonable 31.

Len told her she was 'blossoming, adding: 'It could have been sharper, but it was so full of gusto. I thought it was terrific.'

Graceful: Ola Jordan looked typically stunning as she took to the dancefloor with ex-footballer Robbie Savage

Alesha said it was a 'credible opening to the show', while it was unclear if Bruno's comment was a compliment or insult after saying: 'You have the enthusiasm of a manic cheerleader.'

Anita Dobson and Robin Windsor performed the same dance as top scorers Harry and Alino, with their Argentine Tango getting 33.

Bottom of the table: Audley Harrison only scored 20 out of 40, but host Bruce Forsyth said he was his favourite

Bruno was impressed, saying: 'You unleashed her basic instinct. Sexy mama, queen of tango!'

While Alesha was overwhelmed with how good she looks for 62, adding: 'You totally drew me into the story and you look sensational.'

Woman of the hour! Pregnant Amanda Holden is the Ultimate Theatre Star at the Cosmopolitan Awards

It's never too early in the party season to don a bit of festive sparkle.

And Amanda Holden certainly didn't hold back in a brilliant gold ensemble for tonight's Cosmopolitan Ultimate Woman Awards.

The 40-year-old presenter looked stunning in a fitted gold dress, making no secret of her growing baby bump.

And it certainly turned out to be her night, as she picked up the award for Ultimate Theatre Star.

Amanda looked gorgeous as she proudly showed off her award, accentuating her still-slim legs with a towering pair of gold heels.

Meanwhile Blondie singer Debbie Harry picked up the Award for Ultimate Icon, which she proudly displayed standing next to fellow pop star Kylie Minogue.

Unfortunately Debbie appeared to have lost some of her iconic fashion sense, as she looked odd in a floor length black dress covered in lace, accessorised with long black gloves.

Kirstin Hallenga won the award for Ultimate Campaigner, while Nicole Campbell was voted the Ultimate Survivor.

Also on the red carpet for the Cosmopolitan even was X Factor judge Tulisa Contostavlos, in a one-shoulder red dress.
Though the one-sided sleeve looked a little bulky, which was slightly unflattering, the star looked great with her hair in a side bun.
She had an extra reason to smile tonight, as she paid a visit to the dentist earlier today and appears to have had her teeth whitened, with the result putting Simon Cowell's veneers to shame.
The N-Dubz singer was spied visiting a dental practice, and looked eager to flash her dazzling grin as she left the Mayfair Hotel earlier this evening.

Also in attendance was her co-panelist Kelly Rowland- though the pair steered clear of each other on the red carpet.
Kelly appeared fully recovered from the throat infection which saw her miss last week's show, in a floor length hot pink dress.
The Destiny's Child star brought along her X Factor contestants Janet Devlin and Misha B.

Meanwhile Fearne Cotton looked very slim indeed in a short white dress with lacy sleeves.

The presenter and designer showed off her slender legs, and exposed the star tattoo on her right foot.

Abbey Clancey showed up in a very strange turquoise dress with a cutaway section above the chest and heavy eyeliner.

Like Tulisa, Strictly star Holly Valance opted for a one-shoulder look, though she chose a floor-length black gown- complete with 'Come Dancing-style sequins.

Amanda appears to be relishing her pregnancy, looking radiant as she shows off her ever-expanding figure.

But while Amanda highlighted her growing figure in her tight dress tonight, she took to Twitter earlier this week to tell fans Chris has come up with a less than flattering nickname for her.

Tweeting a picture of the Mr Men's Mr Greedy, Amanda wrote: 'Chrispy says I am starting to look like this!

Britain's Got Talent judge Amanda revealed in August that she and Chris were expecting again after tragically losing a baby boy last year.

The pair are already parents to five-year-old daughter Lexi.

And she has told how she is convinced this pregnancy will be positive.

She said: 'This time I just know everything is going to be fine.

'Even Chris, who usually says ‘I hope so’ when I ask for reassurance, now says “I know so”.’
