She may have turned her back on The X Factor, but loyal fans are still rooting for Cheryl Cole's return to the reality show.

At the Manchester auditions yesterday, audience members chanted, 'Bring back Cheryl, bring back Cheryl,' in support of the Geordie judge.

Newbie Tulisa Contostavlos was close to tears as the rowdy crowd started shouting before the new panel even had a chance to take their seats.

The N-Dubz star was also slammed for accusing auditionee Laverne Scott-Roberts - a single mum-of-four - for not 'connecting with the audience'.

Onlookers in the EventCity arena auditorium jeered the 23-year-old judge, booing and heckling her for her frank opinion.

Fellow newcomer Gary Barlow, now sitting in Simon Cowell’s former seat, also moaned she had made the wrong decision.

He said: 'I don’t know what you’re going on about, Tulisa.'

Tulisa also looked awkward posing for pictures outside of the venue and seemed to have strayed from her comfort zone.

Dressed in a fitted pencil skirt and frilled top, she appeared to have been dressed by a stylist in an attempt to mould her into the next fashion icon.

But the straight-talking Londoner should be able to handle herself.

Before taking to the stage, Tulisa said: 'If I wasn't in N-Dubz right now, I would audition for the X Factor.

'I've always loved the show. It gives people who are diamonds in the rough a great chance of exposure.

'I stand for being yourself - do not get fooled by this gassed-up industry, because in truth it's actually complete b******s.
'I will not pretend that I like everyone and that everything's la-de-dah, because that's a load of s**t.'

Veteran Louis Walsh is still on the panel, while Kelly Rowland completes the line-up.

One fan said after yesterday’s auditions: 'It’s strange without Simon, but the format’s really missing Cheryl.'
