When Katherine Heigl burst onto the scene in the nineties, it appeared that Hollywood had found their next American sweetheart.

With her blonde locks, luminous smile and Californian tan, she had all the right attributes to be the quintessential girl next door.

But the 33-year-old actress says that things didn't really go to plan, all thanks to her sharp tongue.

Slipping into an array of glamorous and sexy outfits for Elle magazine, the blonde bombshell discusses her outspoken ways.

She says that with her biting manner, she hasn't followed in the footsteps of actresses such as Jennifer Aniston and Jennifer Garner, who have carved a name out for themselves by being the more virtuous leading ladies.

'I've never really been America's sweetheart, but for a minute I think that's what they wanted me to be,' she tells the magazine. 'And I had 'em for a second thinking maybe I was.'

'And then I opened my mouth, and it was very clear I wasn't.'

She says that she takes after her mother Nancy with her blunt attitude.

'There's so much of my mother's caustic, sarcastic, irreverent take on things,' she says.

'But I also love and embrace it. I look at some of what I had to say, and I'm like, Oh my God, I would tell myself to shut up too."'

Despite her frankness, Heigl says like any woman, she still cares what other people think.

'I think it's a female thing. I'm just that a**hole who really wants everyone to like me, and it's a ridiculous goal and it's an impossible goal,' she explains.

'But I think if I keep pushing forward and showing myself through and through, they will see me again for what I really am and what has been sort of spun about me.'

Katherine, who often opts for comfort over style, looks stunning in an array of sophisticated looks for a photo shoot in the magazine.

The mother-of-one shows off her stunning curves and just the right amount of cleavage in a black bra and chic tuxedo jacket in one of the smouldering shots.

The look is finished off with a gold Lara Bohnic choker and diamond stud earrings.

The New Year's Eve star is also a dream in a cream halter neck pleated dress, which perfectly compliments her warm tan.

In another image, Heigl flaunts her long legs in a white wrap dress as she enjoys a cocktail at a coffee table.

And for her January cover shot, the actress looks effortless in a simple pair of jeans and a cream blouse.

Katherine is happily married to her husband Josh Kelley and the couple have a three-year-old girl adopted daughter Naleigh.

In New Year's Eve, Heigl plays Laura Carrington, a caterer forced to work on December 31.

The actress also receives a smooch from rocker Jon Bon Jovi as part of the role.

The Knocked Up star told E!: 'Yes, I made out with him. It’s always so nerve wracking. There’s all the giggles.’

And speaking of Jon she gushed: ‘He’s just a gem. One of the nicest guys ever.'

He may been having issues in his off-screen love life with wife Demi Moore recently filing for divorce.

But it seems that Ashton Kutcher's relationship with his on-screen love interest is going quite swimmingly.

The 38-year-old Two And A Half Men star couldn't keep his eyes nor hands off his New Year's Eve co-star Lea Michele at the premiere of the star-studded film in Los Angeles last night.

And it's no wonder why.

The 25-year-old Glee star dared to bare in a plunging silver tulle gown, with the ensemble showing off plenty of her decolletage.
The actress let the risque dress do all of the talking, pairing the look with just an antique style bracelet and earrings, and wearing her tresses in a soft wavy style to the side.
Ashton meanwhile opted for a charcoal suit, which he paired with a checked shirt and gold tie.

The duo kept very close as they posed on the red-carpet, with Lea at one point tenderly touching Ashton's cheek as he put his arm around her waist.

The duo continued the affection as they cuddled up various times whilst walking the press line.

They talk about the importance of New Year's kiss and eventually lock lips at the conclusion of the movie.

The pair's flirty demeanor come after Ashton's recent romance troubles.

Ashton's wife Demi, 49, recently filed for divorce after allegations that the actor had cheated on her with 22-year-old party girl Sara Leal.

Recently over the Thanksgiving holiday Ashton returned to his hometown in Iowa where he spent time living it up partying as well as seeking some time to soul search and get in touch with nature on a walk through the fields.

It appears that Demi, who announced she would be filing for divorce from Ashton last month, has also been moving on with a little help from her friends.

The actress has been seen spending time with Scott-Vincent Borba with reports emerging that she was dating the skincare mogul, but a source close to the actress has told MailOnline the pair are just ‘platonic friends’.

Demi and Ashton’s relationship broke down after claims emerged that the actor had cheated on Leal, on the weekend of his wedding anniversary.

On November 17, Demi announced that she was filing for divorce from toyboy husband Kutcher after six years of marriage.

In a statement she said: 'It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my six-year marriage to Ashton.

Meanwhile, Lea and Ashton weren't the only huge stars at tonight's event.

They were joined by a slew of Hollywood big-hitters, who also have starring roles in the film.

Pfeiffer stars in the film as a frustrated executive secretary who decides to tackle her unfulfilled resolutions with the help of Efron's bike messenger.

It is set in modern-day New York City with a variety of intertwining love stories.

Heigl must decide whether or not to give her ex, Jon Bon Jovi, another chance.

And Heigl's Life As We Know It co-star Duhamel is Sam Ricker, a businessman trying to get to New York City to reunite with his love interest from the previous year's night of revelry.

Both the Michele and Bon Jovi, 49, will sing in the film.

Jennifer Aniston is seven years wiser than Reese Witherspoon.

And that wisdom apparently paid off for the 42-year-old actress last night at the Elle Annual Women in Hollywood event, where she managed to outfox her fellow Thespian friend.

Aniston was streaks ahead as she stepped out to the Beverly Hills soiree in a daringly short, low-cut silver dress.

As a result it was the Friends star who came off looking more youthful than 35-year-old Reese, who played it somewhat demure in a Navy blue trouser suit.

The pair cosied up and put on their best smiles as they chatted amid a frenzy of flashbulbs.

Katherine Heigl proved she does still have it in her to look glamorous, and stepped out of her customary matronly attire in favour of a pretty LBD which put her amble cleavage on show.
Michelle Pfeiffer defied her age, with the 53-year-old looking breathtaking in a belted black dress with a plunging v-shaped neckline.
Other celebs who put their back into the style effort included Camila Alves, who wore a polka-dot blue number and Amber Heard, who was pretty in pink, teamed with a slick of blood-red lipstick.
