The anti-Little Mermaid: Semi-nude Lady Gaga transforms into a nightmarish version of the mythical creature

She rarely wears much anyway. But Lady Gaga found a new way to expose herself as she wore a perspex bustier which left little to the imagination.

Dressed as the antithesis of Disney's Little Mermaid - Gaga appears in the video for new song You & I as a nightmarish version, ghost-like skin with green hair and weird ink marks on her face.

But it was her outfit which made the most impact as she skin-coloured bustier gave the illusion that she was naked from the waist up.

The song is reported to be about her on-off lover of six years Luc Carl and half way through the track Gaga breaths: 'six whole years' to the camera.

Carl runs a New York bar and Gaga also sings the lines: 'He says sit back down where you belong, in the corner of my bar with your high heels on.'

The promotional clip appears to be rather R-rated - typical of the outrageous singer - but quite whether it will escape censorship on TV's music channels remains to be seen.

She starts out the video by picking grass out of her bloodied feet, before a montage of images, including her stopping at an ice cream van.

Somehow she manages to make the epic journey in a black ankle length skirt, strapped stilettos and giant metal-rimmed sunglasses.

Of course the canny singer, real name Stefani Germanotta insists it all makes perfect sense.

She said: 'The premise of the video is that I've walked all the way from New York City to Nebraska to get my boyfriend back.

‘I'm walking with no luggage, it's just me and my ankles are kind of bleeding a little bit and there's grass stuck in my shoes and I've got this outfit on - it's real New York sort of clothing as it's woolly.

‘It's the idea that when you're away from somebody you love it's torture.

‘It's a very powerful and awful and strange feeling when you're away from the person you love.'

Cheeky Gaga leaked the video on her own Youtube page, and it lived up to her usual bizarrely epic standards.

She dons a series of wacky ensembles the singer would claim are works of high fashion.

She dons a scaled tail as Yuyi the semi-nude mermaid, and frolicks with her boyfriend in a galvanized tub.

As her male alter-ego character Jo Calderone, she bashes away on the piano in a white T-shirt and black trousers.

The video begins with Gaga walking to Nebraska, picking the grass out of her shoes and her bloodied feet. But we also see her in a wedding gown, in flashbacks

She drops to her knees in front of an ice cream truck, where the frozen treats are served by a scary, toothless man. There is a barn in the distance and we think she’s reached her destination.

She may have walked for miles, but she also dances in a barn, with her wild mane of blue hair. We also see some sort of mechanical Gaga being assembled and injected with some unidentifiable substance.

Yuyi is also being watered in her tub by a strapping lad, as she is thrashing and splashing about.

Following on from her latest video is the news she is taking over Santa’s Workshop in the windows of Barneys New York.

A spokesman for the iconic store said: 'For the first time ever, Barneys New York will convert an entire floor of its Madison Avenue flagship for the holiday initiative

'Starting in mid-November, Gaga’s Workshop will be brought to life throughout the fifth floor of the Men’s Store and the store’s iconic Madison Avenue windows.'

Gaga will also design a range of 'exclusive, small gift items' to be sold at the workshop.

'In the spirit of the holiday season,' Barneys New York will donate 25 percent of all proceeds from sales to a charity of Gaga’s choice.

Holiday shopping bags will feature a cartoon of Gaga sporting long blue hair and a skintight version of Santa’s red suit.

Mark Lee, Barneys New York CEO said: 'Lady Gaga is a rare cultural phenomenon... a New York City landmark, we wanted to celebrate Lady Gaga as a fellow New Yorker and amazing talent.'

Meanwhile the singer has been confirmed to perform at the upcoming 2011 MTV Video Music Awards.

Gaga joins a star-studded VMA roster that already includes Adele, Lil Wayne, Bruno Mars, Chris Brown and Young the Giant.

The 2011 VMAs will air from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles live on Sunday, August 28, at 9 p.m.
